Dow hoppet med mer enn 400 poeng fredag til et rekordhøyt nivå etter at en godartet inflasjonsrapport ryddet veien for Federal Reserve til å fokusere på å styrke arbeidsmarkedet samtidig som den fortsatte rentelettelsen.
I nylig handel var Dow Jones Industrial Average opp 442 poeng, eller 1 %, til 42.617. Blue-chip-indeksen nådde en all-time high på 42.628,32
S&P 500, som stengte rekord på torsdag, steg opp 0,1 %, mens Nasdaq falt 0,2 %. De tre store indeksene er på vei for sin tredje uke med oppgang på rad.
En rapport fra handelsdepartementet viste at forbruksforbruket økte moderat i august, noe som tyder på at økonomien beholdt noe av sitt solide momentum i tredje kvartal, mens inflasjonspresset fortsatte å avta.
«Det er en lettelse å ha (inflasjon) bevege seg i riktig retning, og forhåpentligvis fortsetter det i den retningen,» sa Joe Saluzzi, co-head for aksjehandel i Themis Trading.
«Det spiller ingen rolle om det er 50 bps eller 25 bps. Det som betyr noe er, vil de fortsette å kutte rentene i løpet av neste år?»
Oddsen for at sentralbanken vil kutte renten med 50 basispunkter på møtet i november var på rundt 52,1 %, sammenlignet med 50 % sett før dataene. De for en 25 bps reduksjon står på omtrent 47,9 %, i henhold til CME Groups FedWatch Tool.
Inflasjonen modererte seg mot sentralbankens 2 %-mål ga Fed nok rom til å starte sin politiske lettelsessyklus med et rentekutt på 50 basispunkter forrige uke. Fokus vil nå skifte til en rekke arbeidsmarkedsrapporter som kommer neste uke.
Russell 2000-indeksen, som følger small caps, ga bedre resultater med en oppgang på 0,7 %.
Teknikkaksjer som Nvidia og Amazon tapte henholdsvis 0,9 % og 0,4 % og veide Nasdaq.
University of Michigans siste september-estimat på forbrukernes sentiment var 70,1, sammenlignet med estimater på 69,3, ifølge økonomer spurt av Reuters.
Kommentarer fra Fed-guvernør Michelle Bowman senere på dagen vil forbli i fokus.
Sent på torsdag sa Fed-guvernør Lisa Cook at sentralbankens sjeldne trekk tidligere denne måneden kan adressere økt «nedsiderisiko» for sysselsettingen.
Blant andre aksjer steg Bristol-Myers Squibb 2,3 % etter at FDA godkjente schizofrenimedisinen.
Costco Wholesale falt 2,8 % etter å ha publisert lavere omsetning i fjerde kvartal.
USA-noterte aksjer i kinesiske firmaer som Alibaba steg 3,5 %, PDD Holdings steg 5,8 % og NetEase steg 2,8 % etter at Kinas sentralbank senket renten og injiserte likviditet i banksystemet, i sitt siste stimuleringstrekk.
Gruvearbeidere som Arcadium la til 4,2 % og USA-noterte aksjer i BHP steg 1,5 % etter at en rapport viste at de kinesiske byene Shanghai og Shenzhen planlegger å oppheve gjenværende restriksjoner på boligkjøp for å tiltrekke potensielle kjøpere.
