En sjømann fra Florida avslørte at han fortalte sin elskede hund at «dette er ikke dagen vi skal dø» da drømmebåten hans begynte å synke og de ble reddet i Mexicogulfen under orkanen Helene torsdag.
Earl Barcome og hans 10 år gamle Golden Retriever Gunn, hadde bodd på den 36 fot lange seilbåten, det passende navnet Selkie, i et år etter at forholdet hans på over tretti år tok slutt, ifølge familien hans.
64-åringen brukte måneder på å spore opp den «perfekte båten» rundt i landet for å seile til Florida og «starte et nytt kapittel,» sa Shirley Barcome på en GoFundMe-side.
Seilbåten var «kulminasjonen av en livslang drøm, og ga ham trøst og hensikt etter et vanskelig kapittel i livet,» la hun til.
Det første året på vannet opplevde den eventyrlystne sjømannen, sammen med hunden sin, «fred og helbredelse» helt til Helene ble dannet i det nærliggende farvannet.
Barcome planla å navigere bort fra Helene 100 miles sør for Sanibel Island til et beskyttet innløp, men båtens motor sviktet halvveis gjennom reisen.
Seilbåten begynte å ta på seg vann da lensepumpen blåste og paret plutselig sto i brysthøyt vann inne i fartøyets lugar.
«Det flyttet fjell med vann. Hver vei du snur deg. Og disse bølgene var akkurat hvor du ser, sier Barcome til WBBH.
Barcome henvendte seg til kameraten sin og forsikret ham om at de ville overleve.
«Jeg sa, Gun, dette er ikke dagen vi skal dø, jeg ringer kystvakten,» sa han.
Barcome ringte desperat kystvakten for å få hjelp fra en radio han hadde ombord, og et helikopter ble sendt til stedet hans omtrent 40 mil vest for Sanibel-øya.
Redningssvømmere fra USCG Air Station Clearwaters post så båten rundt klokken 15.00 den 26. september.
Den dramatiske redningen fanget på video av kystvakten, fanget en dykker som støtet ned i vannet da Barcome og Gunn, begge iført redningsvester, slapp unna den synkende båten ved å hoppe i det harde vannet.
«Han faller i vannet og bare strøm svømmer til båten min,» sa Barcome til utsalgsstedet. «Og han sier: ‘Jeg trenger dere i vannet nå.'»
Paret ble brakt inn i helikopteret av en kurv da den takknemlige sjømannen forlot fartøyet sitt i åpent vann.
«Earl har mistet alt. Uten midler og drømmen hans knust, føles gjenoppbygging fra denne tragedien umulig uten hjelp», skrev Shirley Barcome på innsamlingsaksjonen med sikte på å hjelpe broren hennes å bygge seg tilbake fra det ødeleggende tapet.
Etter at han ble reddet fra den dødsdømte båten, får Barcome et nytt syn på livet når han kommer seg på beina igjen og bygger seg opp igjen.
«Så hva, hva kommer neste? tiden vil vise, du vet, har jeg håp? Jeg har, jeg har en ny, jeg har en ny forståelse. Og det er en vakker ting, sa han til avisen. «Erkjennelsen av at livet er litt viktigere var: Det var en ny dag. Det var en ny dag. Og hva har jeg å klage på? Jeg har skjorte og bukser, sa Barcome.
Minst 64 mennesker ble drept av orkanen Helene, som etterlot et spor av ødeleggelser fra Florida til Great Lakes-regionen etter å ha falt i land i Sunshine State Big Bend-området torsdag kveld som en kategori 4-storm.
