En meksikansk statsborger ble skutt ned midt på lyse dagen i nærheten av et luksuriøst feriested i Cancun av to mistenkte som flyktet på vannscooter mens turister klemte seg sammen under den skumle scenen, ifølge rapporter.
Den dødelige skytingen skjedde onsdag rundt middagstid i det myndighetene mener var et målrettet angrep bak femstjerners Riu Caribe, rapporterte Riviera Maya News.
Minst to bevæpnede menn nærmet seg det uidentifiserte offeret, antatt å være i 30-årene, og skjøt flere ganger, sa politiet, ifølge det lokale uttaket.
Etter å ha åpnet ild flyktet de mistenkte fra stedet på vannscooter, ifølge rapporter.
Offeret er ikke identifisert, men hotellet sa i en kort uttalelse at han ikke var en gjest eller en arbeider på hotellet, ifølge Riviera Maya News.
Video lagt ut på sosiale medier og rapportert av news.com.au viste bekymrede badedraktkledde gjester og arbeidere samlet i lobbyen på hotellet, hvor rom kan koste opptil $350 per natt, per kajakk.
Meksikanske påtalemyndigheter sa onsdag at det antas at det dødelige offeret kan ha vært en del av dødsskuddet på en 12-åring i løpet av sommeren.
I den skytingen på høylys dag åpnet to bevæpnede menn på jetski ild på stranden og drepte den uskyldige tilskuergutten etter at de forsøkte å ta ut en rivaliserende narkohandler, rapporterte CBS News den gang.
Det amerikanske utenriksdepartementet har oppfordret turister fra delstatene til å utvise økt forsiktighet når de reiser til Mexico.
«Voldelig kriminalitet – som drap, kidnapping, bilkapring og ran – er utbredt og vanlig i Mexico,» sa utenriksdepartementet.
«Den amerikanske regjeringen har begrenset mulighet til å yte nødtjenester til amerikanske borgere i mange områder av Mexico, ettersom det er forbudt eller begrenset å reise fra amerikanske statsansatte til visse områder.»
