Et par tenåringsjenter druknet utenfor Coney Island fredag kveld etter at de løp ut i havet igjen etter et kort regnvær, ifølge politiet og en rapport.
De to jentene, 17 og 18, ble savnet i vannet rundt klokken 20.10 i nærheten av Stillwell Avenue i Brooklyn før de ble funnet på strandlinjen klokken 21.15, sa politiet.
Begge ofrene ble ført til Coney Island Hospital hvor de ble erklært døde, sa NYPD.
Politiet fikk først informasjon om en 24 år gammel mann som også var savnet i vannet, men den rapporten ble senere ubegrunnet.
Vitner fortalte ABC 7 at de fleste mennesker på stranden flyktet etter ly når det begynte å regne.
Men tenåringene endte opp med å hoppe tilbake i vannet selv etter at en mann prøvde å stoppe dem.
Det er uklart om mannen kjente dem, men han kunne ikke svømme og ingen andre kunne hjelpe jentene på grunn av hvor røft vannet var, rapporterte ABC 7.
Livvakter på Coney Island er på vakt mellom 10.00 og 18.00, ifølge byens parkavdeling.
Svømming er ikke tillatt utenom disse tidene eller i lukkede deler av stranden.
De tragiske dødsfallene kommer en uke etter at to tenåringsgutter ble feid bort fra Jacob Riis Park i Rockaways, Queens og senere funnet døde.
De to unge ofrene ble identifisert som 16 år gamle Elyjha Chandler og vennen hans, 17 år gamle Christian Perkins.
I fjor sommer ble en 15-åring funnet død dager etter at han ble savnet i vannet utenfor Coney Island, ifølge rapporter den gang.
Broren hans, 14, ble reddet under den skumle scenen.
