Forskere dechiffrerte til slutt et sett med 4000 år gamle babylonske tabletter – og meldingene handler ikke om lyse håp for fremtiden, men er nesten alle død, undergang og dysterhet.
De fire leirtavlene som har kileskrift skrevet over dem, forutsier kongers død og sivilisasjoners undergang, ifølge en fersk studie publisert i Journal of Cuneiform Studies.
De gamle gjenstandene ble oppdaget for mer enn 100 år siden i dagens Irak og er en del av British Museums samling, men er først nå oversatt til moderne språk.
Spådommen fra folket i det sørlige Mesopotamia var basert på månens bevegelse, nærmere bestemt måneformørkelser – når månen faller bak jordens skygge.
De «representerer de eldste eksemplene på kompendier av måneformørkelsesvarsel som ennå er oppdaget,» skrev rapportforfatterne Andrew George og Junko Taniguchi.
Babylonerne analyserte formørkelsene etter tid på natten, skyggebevegelser, varighet og datoer som de deretter brukte til å forutsi forskjellige hendelser, ifølge studien.
De trodde «hendelser på himmelen» var tegn fra guder som advarte om fremtiden til jordbundne folk og herskere.
Varselene som er skrevet inn på tavlene inkluderer «en konge vil dø, ødeleggelse av Elam,» et område i Mesopotamia i det som nå er Iran, hvis «en formørkelse blir skjult fra sentrum på en gang [and] fjerne alt på en gang.» Live Science rapportert.
En annen forutsier «undergangen til Subartu og Akkad», to andre regioner av tiden hvis «en formørkelse begynner i sør og deretter klarner».
Andre angående varsler sier «det vil være et angrep på landet av en gresshoppesverm», «det vil være tap av storfe» og at «en stor hær vil falle.»
Noen av varslene kan ha vært basert på tidligere observerte sammenfall mellom tidspunktet for forskjellige formørkelser og store hendelser, ifølge George, en emeritusprofessor i babylonsk ved University of London.
«Opprinnelsen til noen av varslene kan ha ligget i faktisk erfaring – observasjon av varsel etterfulgt av katastrofe,» sa han til WordsSideKick.com.
Likevel var de fleste sannsynligvis basert på teorier snarere enn ekte bevis.
Tablettene stammer sannsynligvis fra Sippar, en gammel babylonsk by sørvest for det som nå er Bagdad, ifølge professoren.
De ble brukt av rådgivere for kongen for å forutsi fremtidige hendelser.
«De som ga råd til kongen holdt vakt på nattehimmelen og ville matche observasjonene deres med det akademiske korpuset av himmelske omen-tekster,» skrev forfatterne i studien.
For å få en ny mening om sannsynligheten for at varsler skjer, ville rådgiverne studere innvollene til ofrede dyr «for å avgjøre om kongen var i reell fare,» ifølge forskerne.
De ville også utføre ritualer for å fjerne det dårlige varselet og forhindre at spådommene skjedde, skrev George og Taniguchi.
Eller babylonerne ville utnevne en erstatterkonge i forkant av den forestående faren, slik at personen ville bære støyten av gudenes vrede – og til slutt bli drept – mens den virkelige kongen ville forbli uskadd, ifølge NASA.
De babylonske astronomene ble i stand til å forutsi måneformørkelser med «en rimelig nøyaktighet», bemerket romadministrasjonen.
Funnet kommer i hælene på to eldgamle nordamerikanske strukturer som kollapser innen bare ni dager etter hverandre – en pyramide ved Ihuatzio arkeologiske sone i den meksikanske delstaten Michoacán og Double Arch i Utah.
Men det er en mer overnaturlig forklaring ifølge Purépecha-stammen.
«For våre forfedre, byggherrene, var dette et dårlig tegn som indikerte nærhet til en viktig hendelse,» sa Tariakuiri Alvarez til The US Sun.
