Nesten ni av ti amerikanere har sett levekostnadene deres øke de siste fem årene, og en ny studie har funnet ut at det har en enorm innvirkning på hvordan de handler, spesielt på nettet.
Undersøkelsen blant 2000 amerikanske voksne fant at forbrukere nå bruker mest på dagligvarer (35 %), klær (27 %) og hjemmevarer (17 %) når de handler på nettet.
Over tre av fire (76 %) tror at den underliggende årsaken til økningen i levekostnadene skyldes inflasjon, noe som fører til at 61 % av forbrukerne endrer sine netthandelsvaner.
På oppdrag fra Forter og utført av Talker Research, viste studien at folk har tatt tak i endringene i levekostnadene deres ved å handle sjeldnere (55 %), kun kjøpe nødvendigheter (44 %) og kjøpe den billigste versjonen av produktene de vil ha (34 %).
Over en tredjedel (37 %) har også måttet endre reiseplanene for det neste året på grunn av økte levekostnader. For å ha råd til å reise bruker én av ti kredittkortpoeng og flymil, og 66 % av dem bruker poeng og mil oftere enn for fem år siden.
Resultatene fant også at mange amerikanske forbrukere endrer hvor og hvordan de handler som svar på økningen i levekostnadene.
Seksten prosent av generasjon Z-forbrukere handler på sosiale medieplattformer oftere enn landsgjennomsnittet (7 %); mens 19 % handler på markedsplasser oftere, sammenlignet med landsgjennomsnittet på 11 %.
42 prosent av alle respondentene bruker Kjøp nå, betal senere (BNPL) ofte eller hele tiden, mens Gen Z igjen tar ledelsen og bruker betalingsmetoden oftest (53 %).
BNPL-tjenester brukes oftest til å kjøpe klær (43 %), hjemmevarer (34 %) og til å dekke forbrukernes dyreste månedlige nettkjøp: dagligvarer (20 %). Interessant nok bruker nesten én av fem Gen Z (19 %) respondenter BNPL for samkjøring sammenlignet med landsgjennomsnittet på 7 %.
For å bekjempe levekostnadene sine, sa mange respondenter at de ville bli lokket til å handle online fra selskaper med jevne mellomrom hvis de tilbød en slags fordel. Den mest populære fordelen blant forbrukere er gratis frakt (63 %), etterfulgt av rimelighet (61 %), hyppige salg (36 %), gratis og enkle returer (34 %) og lojalitetsprogrammer (33 %).
Varierte og nye betalingsalternativer er også fristende for forbrukere, inkludert selskaper som aksepterer digitale lommebøker (20 %) og de som tilbyr kjøp-nå-betal-senere (BNPL) alternativer/kryptovaluta (15 %) og butikkkredittkort (10 %) .
«Levekostnadsøkningen betyr at forbrukere fundamentalt endrer sine netthandelsvaner,» sa Doriel Abrahams, sjefsteknolog ved Forter. «Merker som ønsker å opprettholde kundelojalitet og verdi i dette makromiljøet, må også utvikle seg. Fra de enkle – men viktige – fordelene til betalingsopplevelsen, forbrukere vil ha mer og bedre av favorittmerkene sine.»
Nesten halvparten (48 %) av alle respondentene har vurdert måter å manipulere netthandelen til deres fordel, inkludert stable kuponger (50 %) og videresalg av svært ettertraktede produkter (15 %).
Disse taktikkene varierer på tvers av generasjoner – 20 % av Millennials vurderer å åpne flere nettkontoer for å motta kampanjer, mens 24 % av Gen Z vurderer å dele passord til nettabonnementer med venner og familie.
«I lys av høyere priser, kutter mange forbrukere kostnader og hjørner,» fortsatte Abrahams. «Merker må finne en balanse mellom å drive virksomhet med en god kundeopplevelse og begrense skaden forårsaket av forbrukerløsninger, for eksempel misbruk av kampanjer og selskapets retningslinjer. Det handler til syvende og sist om å vite hvem dine gode kunder er.»
