En 105 år gammel kvinne som begynte ved Stanford University i 1936, kom nylig tilbake til campus etter 83 års fravær for å motta sin graduate grad – og hun har inspirert folk siden den gang.
Virginia Hislop ble uteksaminert fra Palo Alto, California, universitetet for noen uker siden med en mastergrad i utdanning, sa Stanfords nyhetsnettsted.
Daniel Schwartz, dekan ved Stanfords Graduate School of Education, delte detaljene med Fox News Digital i et telefonintervju.
«Jeg skjønte jeg [didn’t] må bekymre deg for å holde en konfirmasjonstale,» sa Schwartz til Fox News Digital om opplevelsen.
Han sa at han bare ville «introdusere Virginia – eller «Ginger» – og det vil være nok til å sette stemningen.»
Hislop meldte seg først på Stanford som bachelorstudent i 1936, ifølge Stanfords Graduate School of Education.
Etter å ha oppnådd sin bachelorgrad i utdanning i 1940, ble Hislop værende på Stanford for å ta en doktorgrad mens han underviste, sa universitetet på nyhetsnettstedet.
Men så grep kjærlighet og krig inn.
Drømmer knust av andre verdenskrig
I 1941 hadde Hislop fullført kursene sine og forberedte seg på å levere sin siste avhandling da mannen som skulle bli hennes ektemann ble kalt til tjeneste under andre verdenskrig, rapporterte Stanfords nyhetsnettsted.
Så hun satte utdanningsplanene sine på pause for å gifte seg og forlot campus før hun ble uteksaminert.
«Jeg trodde det var en av tingene jeg kunne plukke opp underveis hvis jeg trengte det, og jeg likte alltid å studere, så det var egentlig ikke en stor bekymring for meg – og det å gifte seg var det,» sa hun til Stanfords nyhetsnettsted.
Etter flere år med å flytte rundt i landet som hærkone, bosatte Hislop seg til slutt med mannen sin og to barn i Yakima, Washington, etter krigen, fortalte hun Yakima Herald-Republic i 2018.
«Jeg kom ikke tilbake til undervisningen, men jeg føler at jeg brukte lærerbeviset mitt til god nytte i tjenesten [on] komiteer og i styrer og prøver å forbedre utdanningsmulighetene hver eneste sjanse jeg fikk,” sa hun til publikasjonen.
Dermed begynte en utdanningskarriere som spenner over mer enn 80 år på kommunalt, fylkes- og statlig nivå i Washington, rapporterte Stanfords nyhetsnettsted.
Da datteren Anne forberedte seg til videregående, var Hislop «ikke fornøyd» med at det ble foreslått et hjemmekunnskapskurs for datteren hennes i stedet for avansert engelsk, sa hun til Yakima Herald-Republic – så hun søkte plass i det lokale skolestyret .
Hislop vant.
«Jeg følte at hun kunne lære å lage mat hjemme, og det var viktigere at hun lærte mer akademiske ferdigheter på skolen,» sa Hislop til Stanford.
Hislop fortsatte med å fungere som et grunnleggende styremedlem for det som den gang var kjent som Yakima Valley Community College.
Hun hjalp til med å skaffe penger til det som skulle bli Heritage University i nærliggende Toppenish, Washington, rapporterte Yakima Herald-Republic.
Hislop hjalp til og med med å etablere et stipend ved Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences i 2017, sa Washington-institusjonen på sin nettside.
Det heter Virginia Hislop Emergency Fund.
«Ventet lenge på dette»
Under den nylige konfirmasjonsseremonien snakket Schwartz om Hislop som en «hard talsmann for likestilling» og sa at han var «stolt over å gi Master of Arts i utdanning til vår 105 år gamle kandidat.»
Schwartz fortalte Fox News Digital at Hislops deltagelse i konfirmasjonsseremonien kanskje ikke hadde skjedd hvis det ikke hadde vært for Hislops svigersønn, som spurte om Schwartz ville gi henne en æresgrad.
Da Schwartz fant Hislops originale utskrifter fra 1941, innså han at hun ikke ville trenge en æresgrad.
«Vi kartla kursene hennes fra tidligere til nåværende kurs, og det tilfredsstilte gjeldende krav til en mastergrad,» sa han til Fox News Digital.
Schwartz sa at Hislops svigersønn var «oppstemt».
Selv i en alder av 105 var Hislop «sterk og skarp,» sa Schwartz, da hun gikk over avgangsstadiet for å motta graden sin.
«Hvis jeg ikke hadde sett transkripsjonene, ville jeg trodd dette var en bløff,» sa Schwartz.
«Hun beveger seg rundt og snakker som en 25 år yngre.»
Øyeblikket var et øyeblikk som Hislop, hennes barn, barnebarn og oldebarn sannsynligvis ikke snart vil glemme.
«Jeg har ventet lenge på dette,» sa hun under konfirmasjonsseremonien.
Siden hun ble uteksaminert har folk på nettet delt sin beundring for prestasjonene hennes i forskjellige fora.
«Skarpt sinn selv i hennes alder,» skrev en person.
En annen sa: «Awww. Hun er fortsatt så klok. Jeg vet ikke hvorfor dette fikk meg til å gråte. Fantastisk.»
Enda en annen skrev: «Gratulerer til henne og må Gud velsigne henne [for] mange år til!»
