Noe av grunnen til at Isaiah Hartenstein valgte Oklahoma City var en mulighet til å «utvide spillet mitt mye», sa han lørdag – spesifikt vise frem et offensivt ferdighetssett som ikke ble oppmuntret av Knicks.
«Hvis du er en NBA-spiller, må du tilpasse deg visse roller. Og det var det jeg gjorde i New York, sa Hartenstein til journalister etter offisielt å ha inngått sin lukrative avtale med Thunder. «Min bortgang kom først i løpet av det siste året. Mitt første år måtte jeg tilpasse meg en bestemt rolle. Så jeg føler at jeg kan komme tilbake til det skyteaspektet. Før skjøt jeg, så jeg vil komme tilbake til det enda mer.»
I sin første sesong med Knicks i 2022-23, var Hartenstein ikke sjenert for vanskelighetene hans med å tilpasse seg den begrensede offensive rollen til en senter i Tom Thibodeaus system – som hovedsakelig var basert på screening og retur. Det var annerledes på hans forrige stopp med Clippers, der Hartenstein slo en og annen 3-poenger med en sterk prosentandel og fikk flere poeng og assists per minutt. Hartenstein hadde flere muligheter med ballen forrige sesong, som han nevnte, men 26-åringen tror Thunder-trener Mark Daigneault vil forbedre spillet hans.
«Jeg har vært i mange situasjoner. Jeg vet hvordan jeg skal tilpasse meg, sa han. «Men måten de spiller på her er veldig spennende for meg. Det kan utvide spillet mitt mye, spesielt offensivt.»
Den andre store faktoren var selvfølgelig penger. Knicks ble begrenset til et tilbud på fire år, $72,5 millioner, som de holdt på bordet til Hartenstein signerte et annet sted. The Thunder ga Hartenstein en treårig kontrakt på 87 millioner dollar – selv om den siste sesongen, som The Post rapporterte, er et lagalternativ. Garantien er to år og omtrent 58 millioner dollar – eller omtrent 11 millioner dollar høyere gjennomsnittslønn enn Knicks’ tilbud.
Det var en vanskelig avgjørelse for Hartenstein, som hadde en garantert startplass i New York og kjemi med lagkameratene. Hans rolle i OKC er ikke satt — «Vi gir ikke løfter om minutter; vi gir ikke løfter om roller; vi gir løfter om miljøer, sa lagpresident Sam Presti lørdag — men en slik økonomisk forpliktelse skjer ikke uten planer om spilletid.
OKC vant 57 kamper forrige sesong – flest i Vesten – og mesterskapsvinduet ble åpent med store kontrakter denne sommeren.
«Jeg var i en situasjon der jeg elsker lagkameratene mine i New York. Jeg setter virkelig pris på hva Thibs og Leon [Rose, Knicks president,] gjorde for meg. Og fansen i New York viste mye kjærlighet, sa han. «Men å gå inn i denne situasjonen er veldig spennende. På lang avstand så jeg alltid hvordan kulturen var. Spillestilen passer meg virkelig. Jeg er en spiller med høy IQ. Det er mange gutter som klipper. Jeg tror jeg er en av de beste pasningsspillerne i NBA. Og så bare kulturen, veldig familiebasert. Det var bare noe som var veldig spennende for meg. Jeg føler at jeg virkelig kan utvide spillet mitt.»
Å tape Hartenstein satte Knicks i klem når de navigerer i et redusert sentermarked for en erstatter. Logikken indikerer at Thibodeau vil starte Mitchell Robinson, som er utsatt for skader, men som var på en All-Defense-bane forrige sesong før han gjennomgikk ankeloperasjon. De kan fortsatt signere Precious Achiuwa på nytt ved å bruke hans fuglerettigheter, men kilder sa at Thibodeau foretrekker ham med makt fremfor sentrum.
Centers Jericho Sims og andre runde rookie Ariel Hukporti er også på listen. Ledere i ligaen uttrykte skepsis til at Knicks, etter å ha tømt sine eiendeler i Mikal Bridges-handelen, kan svinge en rapportert avtale for Utah-senteret Walker Kessler.
Charlottes Nick Richards er også et ryktet handelsmål. Gjenværende sentre i free agency inkluderer Daniel Theis, Cody Zeller, Tristan Thompson, Mike Muscala, Omer Yurtseven og Taj Gibson.
Hartenstein er i mellomtiden offisielt med Thunder og håper på sin «utvidede» offensive rolle.
«Du må erkjenne det faktum at Isaiah kom fra en stor situasjon,» sa Presti om banen til spilleren. «Det verste du kan gjøre er å gå inn i en situasjon og prøve å forminske den nåværende plassen som spilleren har spilt i. Jeg synes å vise mye respekt for det, respektere hvor vanskelig en avgjørelse kan være slik for en spiller. Spesielt når de har hatt suksess, både personlig og kollektivt. Du kan alltid sette din beste fot frem.
«Jeg tror det handler mindre om å tenke på fortiden med det andre laget og mer om å tenke på fremtiden med laget ditt. Hvordan det potensielt kan se ut. En del av det med at han bare er 26 og vår tro på at vi kan fortsette utviklingen hans og sette ham i situasjoner der han kan utvide sine styrker og det han gjør bra. Men dette er virkelig tøffe avgjørelser for gratis agenter. … Heldigvis for oss tror jeg han var i stand til å se noen av tingene vi snakket om.»
Jalen Brunson er kvalifisert til å signere forlengelsen på fredag, og hvis han gjør det (det er noe han absolutt hadde vurdert i løpet av sesongen, ifølge en kilde), ville han lagt igjen ganske mye penger på bordet.
Den maksimale utvidelsen Brunson kan blekk denne sommeren er fire år, 156,5 millioner dollar. Hvis han venter til fri byrå i 2025, er han kvalifisert for en ny kontrakt fra Knicks verdt rundt $260 millioner-$270 millioner over fem år.
Kanskje relevant for denne samtalen var Brunsons reaksjon på at OG Anunoby signerte sin femårige avtale på 212 millioner dollar. Punktvakten ble blåst bort av pengene.
«Jeg sa, ‘Jammen.’ Jeg var som hva eff. …212 millioner dollar? Brunson sa på sin podcast, «Roommates Show.»
Gjør det mer eller mindre sannsynlig at Anunoby får den kontrakten at Brunson godtar en forlengelse? Jeg vet ikke. Men som lagets beste spiller ville Brunson ligge godt under Anunoby når det gjelder års- og totallønn.
Det er imidlertid en verden hvor signering denne sommeren gir Brunson mer penger over tid, siden han ville være kvalifisert for en ekstra forlengelse før. Uansett om Brunson signerer denne sommeren eller neste, er det ingen tvil om at han elsker å spille for Knicks og har all grunn til det. Han er omgitt av venner og familie, og hver dag er en høyskolegjenforening.
Knicks skjuler seg ikke for oppdraget sitt. Det er en forfriskende holdning etter så mange år med ombygging og lave barer.
«Vi jager alle Boston. Det må vi, sa Brunson. «De vant på elitenivå slik de spilte. Så vi må finne ut, uten å være på banen akkurat nå, hvordan kan vi slå dem? Og det er i hendene på frontkontoret. Og når sesongen starter, er det i våre hender.»
