Du har hørt det noen ganger, det er jeg sikker på.
Du har hørt om hvordan den europeiske modellen visstnok er så mye bedre til å utvikle basketballspillere med ballbevegelser og forsvar og fundamentale ting og alt annet tull som finnes der ute.
Du har hørt om den giftige AAU-modellen i USA og hvordan den avler egoisme og narsissisme og iso-ball.
Du har hørt om den internasjonale overtakelsen av spillet, en idé NBA liker å presse frem fordi flere nasjoner som er fascinert av sporten betyr mer potensielle inntekter.
Men her er vi i 2024 – over tre tiår siden det opprinnelige Dream Team – og den globale basketballsporten, nest etter bare fotball i verdensomspennende popularitet, er fortsatt fullstendig dominert av USA
Det er ingenting som det i store lagidretter. Mellom våre dame- og herrelag har USA Basketball vunnet gull ved de fire siste OL. Til sammenligning har fire forskjellige lag vunnet de fem siste OL-titlene i hockey; seks forskjellige nasjoner vant de seks siste verdensmesterskapene i FIFA; tre forskjellige lag vant de fem siste World Baseball Classics.
«Hele greia med systemet er dritt,» sa Jim Boeheim, den legendariske Syracuse-treneren og tidligere Team USA-assistent, til The Post. – Barna våre utvikles. Kritisere det eller ikke, AAU utvikler spillere. Du må spille bra eller få din [butt] sparket inn AAU. Kremen kommer til toppen.»
Boeheim ga et forbehold, både sant og relevant, om at USA ikke er helt uforgjengelig. Det skjer ting. Den tre ganger olympiske mesteren som assistent bemerket at hans Redeem Team i 2008, ledet av Kobe Bryant og LeBron James, endte Spania med bare to poeng i den olympiske finalen.
Men det er en grunn til at Team USA er favoritter på 26,5 poeng i tirsdagens kvartfinale mot Brasil. Jeg holder allerede på med amerikanerne for gullmedaljespillet til tross for vårt antatt dårlige utviklingssystem. Gruppe C var så lett at trener Steve Kerr tillot seg å massere egoer ved å spille en balansert 10-manns rotasjon. Ingen registrerte mer enn 27 minutter i de tre innledende konkurransene.
Og nesten alle Kerrs spillere, med et par unntak, fulgte den velkjente amerikanske pipelinen til AAU for å forberede skole til NCAA til proffer. Det er bevist i å identifisere og fremme de aller beste talentene.
Dette emnet førte til en telefonsamtale til Sonny Vaccaro, nå 85 og alltid ivrig etter å diskutere basketball. Hvis du ikke husker det, var Vaccaro Nike-sjefen som grunnla ABCD Camp, den mangeårige basketeksponeringen og rekrutteringen av sommeren. Vaccaro var den første til å forme grasrotbasketball med store sneaker-konsernpenger, og tiltrakk seg blant mange andre LeBron, Kobe, Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Garnett, Jason Kidd og Derrick Rose.
For å virkelig åpne en nasjons talentmasse, må sporten være tilgjengelig for alle, uavhengig av inntektsnivå. Vaccaro forsto at pay-to-play-modellen var for eksklusiv.
OL i PARIS 2024
Så han fant en måte å bygge opp Nikes merkevare – senere merkene til Adidas og Reebok, som begge også sponset ABCD Camp – samtidig som han ga gratis eksponering og fordeler for ungdomsspillere. Det er en modell nå etterlignet, eskalert, legitimert og feiret, spesielt med NIL-betalinger, men også i ligaer som Overtime Elite.
I sin storhetstid ble Vaccaro utstøtt som snusket og en flekk på integriteten til amatørbasketball, omtrent som NIL-systemet i dag.
«Det var et stigma ved å gjøre det,» sa Vaccaro til The Post. «Fordi noen mennesker – spesielt NCAA – kritiserte.»
Uansett rykte, fungerte systemet. Basketballpotensialet slipper sjelden gjennom nålene i USA, og det er tydelig hvert fjerde år ved OL.
«I dag identifiserer vi spillere når de er 10 år gamle,» sa tidligere USA Basketball-direktør Jerry Colangelo til The Post. «Det er et ganske sofistikert system her. Det er en hel haug med folk på gatehjørnene, i treningsstudioet, Summer League-greiene er over toppen. Så det er en mengde spillere. Og de fortsetter å komme.»
Som Colangelo bemerket, er det naturlige fordeler for USA. Spillermassen er mye større enn de europeiske eller søramerikanske nasjonene. Vår hurtighet og atletikk har en tendens til å overvelde internasjonal konkurranse.
Det er en oppskrift på dominans som Boeheim bare ser virkelig truet av en gryende underdog.
«Når det kommer til å utvikle spillere, har vi gjort det beste. Vi har de beste spillerne, sa Boeheim. «Jeg vil si at atletisk og størrelsesmessig er Afrika den neste grensen. Det går allerede den veien. Det er der jeg ser noe stort skje. NBA utvikler akademier der borte. Barn har fortsatt ikke joggesko i noen av disse landene. Men de får dem. Og jeg tror det vil være endringen – det kan trolig ta 20 år, men jeg tror det vil komme.»
