Visepresident Kamala Harris fordømte de økende sivile tapene i Gaza – og sa at det er «for mange» etter Israels siste luftangrep mot en skolebygning som huser Hamas-aktivister og flyktninger.
I en tale under et kampanjearrangement i Phoenix på lørdag, understreket Harris at Israels forsvarsstyrker hadde «et viktig ansvar» for å unngå sivile tap i Gaza, da det Hamas-drevne helsedepartementet anslår at dødstallet nærmer seg 40.000.
«Altfor mange sivile har blitt drept nok en gang,» sa Harris etter IDFs luftangrep på Gaza City-skolen.
Kommentarene hennes kommer etter at Uncommitted National Movement – gruppen som mobiliserte mer enn 100 000 mennesker for å holde tilbake stemmene sine fra president Biden på grunn av hans støtte til Israel – hevdet at Harris «uttrykte en åpenhet» for å møte dem for å diskutere en mulig våpenembargo mot Israel. jødisk stat.

Harris insisterte lørdag på at Israel har rett til å «gå etter Hamas», men hennes fordømmelse av streiken gjenspeiler økende belastninger mellom Det hvite hus og Jerusalem over krigen i Gaza.
Gazas helsemyndigheter hevdet på lørdag at minst 90 mennesker ble drept, inkludert kvinner og barn, da en IDF-missil slo ned Tabeen-skolen, som Israel påstod at hadde Hamas-militanter og seniorkommandører.
Gaza-tjenestemenn skiller ikke mellom terrorister og sivile når de rapporterer om de døde.
Det israelske militæret avviste påstandene som «overdrevne», og anslår at angrepet faktisk drepte rundt 20 terrorister.
IDF sa ikke hvor mange sivile de trodde døde i streiken på skolen, som også ga flyktninger, men sa at militæret tok alle nødvendige forholdsregler for å begrense skade på sivile.
Med Hamas som rutinemessig bruker skoler til å gjemme seg i og IDF utfører luftangrep på bygningene, har nesten 85 % av skolene i Gaza blitt direkte truffet eller skadet i juli, ifølge FN.
