I det siste ser det ut til at alle har en rå hund i denne kampen om flyet.
Flyreiseoptimalisatorer har sverget til den siste bisarre trenden for å trenge inn i flykulturen – rå dogging – der passasjerer tåler en langdistanseflyvning uten annet enn tankene deres for å holde dem opptatt. Fordelene med tvungen kjedsomhet er imidlertid fortsatt oppe til debatt.
Det provoserende begrepet har fløyet av de sosiale medielistene denne sommeren, da reisende som jakter på innflytelse – for det meste menn – har tilbrakt et halvt dusin timer eller mer i stillhet på et fly i et show av fysisk disiplin og mental utholdenhet.
«Har bare en 7-timers flytur (ny personlig rekord),» skrøt Wudini, en britisk DJ, til publikum i et TikTok-innlegg med over 13,2 millioner visninger. «Ingen hodetelefoner, ingen film, ingen vann, ingenting.»
«Utrolig,» la han til. «Kraften i mitt sinn kjenner ingen grenser.»
Syv timer er en barnelek for Instagram-brukeren Damon Bailey, som delte sitt personlige rekord, 13 og en halv time mellom Shanghai og Dallas, uten noen form for underholdning.
«Det er ganske tøft, ærlig talt,» sa 34-åringen fra Miami, Florida til BBC News – selv om han ikke har noen planer om å stoppe, la han til. «Jeg liker utfordringen, absolutt.»
Til og med godtroende idrettsutøvere gjør det, inkludert Manchester City-fotballstjernen Erling Haaland, som skrøt av sin «lette» syv timer lange rekke med «ingen telefon, ingen søvn, ingen vann, ingen mat».
Tilhengere av raw dogging har antydet at fenomenet var inspirert av Idris Elbas karakter, Sam Nelson – som tåler en nesten åtte timer lang flytur fra Dubai til London uten bekvemmeligheter etter at skurkene kommanderte flyet hans – på Apple TV+-serien «Hijacked».
Til tross for Elbas misunnelsesverdige status som en helt på skjermen, har kritikere av raw dogging IRL gjort skam på den «psykopatiske» praksisen ettersom noen eksperter har advart mot farene med søvn, mat og vannmangel på fly. Det tørre miljøet under fly forårsaker dehydrering innvendig og utvendig, og det er derfor det er så viktig å holde seg hydrert under flyreiser, ifølge reiseeksperter som nylig snakket med Daily Mail, og la til at det heller ikke er noen vits i å avstå fra snacks eller søvn hvis du kroppen forteller deg at den trenger de viktigste tingene.
Imidlertid er det en oppside til denne asketiske flyreisetrenden – gjennom oppmerksomheten. Forretningspsykolog Danielle Haig hevdet kunne gi «en mulighet til å lade opp mentalt, få nye perspektiver,» sa hun til BBC.
Haig mener interessen for rå hunding antyder «en kollektiv lengsel etter balanse når folk søker å gjenvinne sitt mentale rom og fremme en dypere forbindelse med sitt indre.»
Beslektet argumenterer psykologiforsker Sandi Mann, forfatter av «The Science of Boredom,» at lange stunder med stillhet kan være en god ting for de av oss som tilbringer dagene med å stirre på skjermer.
«Vi må redusere behovet for nyhet og stimulering og susende bang-bang dopamin, og bare ta oss tid til å puste og stirre på skyene – bokstavelig talt, hvis du er på en flytur,» sa Mann til BBC.
Hun innrømmet imidlertid at overivrige raw-doggers kan oppleve avtagende avkastning: «Dette er ikke ideelt for en andre times flytur.»
