En ung jente som ble brutalt angrepet av en knivsvingende galning midt i travle London mandag var en turist på besøk med familien hennes fra Australia, ifølge rapporter.
Jenta – bare 11 år gammel – ble tilfeldig grepet av den påståtte galningen, Ioan Pintaru, da hun gikk med sin 34 år gamle mor gjennom Londons turisthotspot, Leicester Square, midt på lyse dagen rundt klokken 11:30.
Etter å ha tatt jenta, skal Pintaru, 32, ha strupet henne i en hodelås og begynte å dytte en biffkniv inn i kroppen hennes – og stakk henne åtte ganger før en nærliggende butikks sikkerhetsvakt taklet ham til bakken og vred det blodige bladet fra hendene hans.
Jenta ble fraktet til sykehuset med sår i nakken, håndleddene, skuldrene og ansiktet, som krevde plastisk kirurgi, ifølge BBC.
Hun har siden blitt utskrevet og forventes å bli frisk.
Pintaru, en rumensk statsborger, ble arrestert og er siktet for drapsforsøk.
Etterforskerne har foreløpig ikke fastslått en motivasjon for det tilfeldige angrepet. Det antas ikke å ha vært terrorrelatert.
Knivstikkingen antas heller ikke å være knyttet til en bølge av vold som har plaget London de siste ukene etter den dødelige knivstikkingen av tre unge jenter som ble drept i en dansetime med Taylor Swift-tema nær Liverpool i juli.
Kaotiske opptøyer ble utløst av denne hendelsen, drevet av falske rykter om at morderen var en tenåringsmuslimsk migrant. Et motiv i angrepet er også uklart.
Leicester Square ser rundt 2,5 millioner mennesker passere ukentlig, mange av dem er turister.
Pinartu, som tjenestemenn sier ikke har noen adresse, forblir i varetekt. Han skal for retten igjen 10. september.
