For mye kaffe kan være en latte for hjertet å håndtere, med en ny studie som kobler over 400 milligram koffein om dagen til økt risiko for hjerte- og karsykdommer selv for ellers friske mennesker.
«Vanlig koffeinforbruk kan forstyrre det parasympatiske systemet, og føre til forhøyet blodtrykk og hjertefrekvens,» forklarte hovedforfatter av studien Nency Kagathara, ved Zydus Medical College and Hospital i Dahod, India.
Kagatharas team målte blodtrykket og hjertefrekvensen til 92 friske voksne etter at de utførte en tre-minutters trinntest. Deltakerne var 18 til 45 år gamle med normalt blodtrykk ved starten av forsøkene.
Nesten 20 % av deltakerne inntok mer enn 400 mg koffein hver dag, noe som tilsvarer omtrent fire kopper kaffe, 10 bokser brus eller to energidrikker.
Kronisk daglig inntak på 400 mg ble funnet å øke hjertefrekvensen og blodtrykket over tid. Studiefunnene ble presentert torsdag på American College of Cardiology-konferansen i Delhi, India.
US Food and Drug Administration har sagt at 400 mg koffein om dagen «ikke generelt er assosiert med farlige, negative effekter», mens de erkjenner at noen mennesker er mer følsomme for koffein og det kan metaboliseres i forskjellige hastigheter.
Mayo Clinic sier at opptil 400 mg koffein «ser ut til å være trygt for de fleste friske voksne.»
Koffein er et sentralstimulerende middel som kan fremme produksjonen av stresshormonene noradrenalin og adrenalin, øke hjertefrekvensen og øke blodtrykket ved å innsnevre blodårene.
Men det har også blitt funnet å heve humøret og muligens redusere risikoen for visse kreftformer, blant andre fordeler.
Kagathara rapporterte at urbane kvinner i forretnings- og lederroller hadde det høyeste daglige koffeininntaket i studien hennes.
De som inntok mer enn 600 mg koffein om dagen hadde betydelig forhøyet hjertefrekvens og blodtrykk etter fem minutters hvile etter trinntesten.
«På grunn av dens effekt på det autonome nervesystemet, kan regelmessig koffeinforbruk sette ellers friske individer i fare for hypertensjon og andre kardiovaskulære hendelser,» sa Kagathara. «Å øke bevisstheten om disse risikoene er avgjørende for å forbedre hjertehelsen for alle.»
Hypertensjon er et annet navn for høyt blodtrykk, en tilstand knyttet til en høyere risiko for koronarsykdom, hjertesvikt, kronisk nyresykdom og demens.
Eksperter foreslår å trene regelmessig og følge et næringsrikt kosthold for å senke blodtrykket. Medisiner kan foreskrives dersom vekttap, kostholdsendringer og trening ikke lykkes.
