Glamrockeren Jack Russell, som frontet 1980-tallets metalgruppe Great White, døde torsdag omgitt av familie og venner i en alder av 63.
Sangeren bukket under etter å ha kjempet mot multippel systematrofi og Lewy-kroppsdemens, rapporterte Rolling Stone.
«Jack er elsket og husket for sin sans for humor, eksepsjonelle livsglede og urokkelige bidrag til rock and roll hvor arven hans for alltid vil trives,» skrev familien hans i en online uttalelse.
Grunnlagt i Los Angeles i 1977, var Great Whites storhetstid på midten av 1980-tallet med det platinaselgende albumet «Once Bitten» fra 1987 og dets 1989-oppfølging «… Twice Shy», med singlene «Rock Me» og «Once Bitten,» Twice Shy», som var bærebjelkene i de første dagene av MTV.
Russell forlot gruppen i 1996 før den reformerte i 2001 da den begynte å turnere under navnet Jack Russell’s Great White.
Den siste dagers inkarnasjon av Great White er beryktet assosiert med infernoet fra 2003 på en hardrockmusikkklubb på Rhode Island som startet da gruppens scenepyroteknikk antente svært brannfarlig akustisk skum som omringet lokalet.
Brannen drepte 100 mennesker, inkludert gitarist Ty Longley, og skadet 230 flere. Det er fortsatt den dødeligste fyrverkeriulykken i USAs historie.
Russell kunngjorde forrige måned at han ville trekke seg fra turné etter diagnosen hans.
«Jeg klarer ikke å prestere på det nivået jeg ønsker og på det nivået du fortjener,» sa Russell på sosiale medier den gang.
«Ord kan ikke uttrykke min takknemlighet for mange år med minner, kjærlighet og støtte.»
