(The Center Square) – Da en ordfører i North Carolina gikk på scenen den siste kvelden av den demokratiske nasjonale konferansen torsdag, fortalte han historien om reisen hans for å starte en restaurant og roste demokratene som partiet som vil hjelpe småbedrifter.
Durham-ordfører Leonardo Williams sa: «For flere år siden begynte min kone Zweli og jeg å lage mat til samfunnet vårt. Vi kjørte til skoler, legekontorer, bare for å gi ut noen få prøver. Men du vet at det krever kapital for å jage drømmen.»
I en tilsynelatende referanse til tidligere president og nåværende republikanske nominerte Donald Trump, sa Williams: «Jeg antar at ikke alle kan ha et lån på flere millioner dollar fra sin far.»
Williams tappet sparepengene sine og i 2008, da Barack Obama var president og Joe Biden visepresident, lanserte restauranten Zwelis kjøkken. Det faktureres på den første restauranten i USA som tilbyr autentisk zimbabwisk mat, fortalte Williams delegatene.
«Biden-Harris-administrasjonen bidro til å gjøre den virkeligheten, de bidro til å gjøre den drømmen til virkelighet for gründere som oss,» sa Williams.
Takket være tilskudd til småbedrifter har restauranten nå tre lokasjoner, sa ordføreren.
«Vi sysselsetter nesten 30 ansatte med en levelønn,» sa Williams. «Men vi er ikke alene. Under Joe Biden og Kamala Harris har mer enn en halv million forretningssøknader blitt sendt inn i North Carolina.»
Harris kjemper for å skape «en mulighetsøkonomi» for gründere, sa Williams.
«Hun vil støtte risikotakere og problemløsere som ønsker å gjøre sin del og ta deres del av den amerikanske drømmen,» sa ordføreren.
Han takket andre gründere som har trivdes under Biden-administrasjonens «historiske støtte» for små bedrifter.
«Kamala Harris kjenner gründere som meg,» sa Williams. «Hun vet at vi er ryggraden i våre lokalsamfunn. Når de lykkes, lykkes vi alle.»
Williams er en tidligere skolelærer og administrator ble valgt inn i bystyret i Durham i desember 2021. Han ble ordfører i desember 2023, ifølge hans offisielle biografi.
