En skummel scene utspilte seg på åpningsdagen til US Open mandag da den japanske stjernen Yoshihito Nishioka plutselig kollapset under sin førsterundekamp.
Nishioka var i det femte settet av kampen mot Miomir Kecmanović da han krasjet i bakken bak på banen.
28-åringen dukket opp i smerte da han taklet alvorlige kramper på en brutalt fuktig dag på Flushing Meadows.
Amerikanske offentlige tjenestemenn skyndte seg umiddelbart til hjelp og Kecmanović kom bort for å tilby Nishioka litt vann mens han satt ved siden av ham.
Nishioka trengte en rullestol for å komme seg av Court 8 da Kecmanović avanserte til andre runde på grunn av pensjonisttilværelsen.
«Tusen takk for støtten…», skrev Nishioka på japansk på X. «Jeg kjente allerede krampe rundt 3-3 i det 4. settet, og serven min på 5-4 (der) var allerede kramper. I finalen (spillet) var korsryggen mer krampaktig enn beina, og jeg klarte ikke å reise meg, og da krampe beina også. Jeg hadde gjentatte spasmer i skulderbladene, hoftene, flankene og lårene.
«Jeg begynte å få problemer med å puste, men ved hjelp av teamet klarte jeg å sette meg inn i en rullestol, og de bar meg bort til tross for krampene mine. Kramperne stoppet ikke på omtrent en time, men de har gitt seg nå. Kroppsdelene mine gjør mye vondt, så jeg planlegger å hoppe over dobbeltspill og reise tilbake til Japan.»
Kecmanović vant det første settet i en tiebreak før Nishioka – den 53.-rangerte spilleren i verden – samlet seg for å vinne det andre og tredje før han droppet det fjerde for å tvinge frem et avgjørende sett.
«Det er synd at det endte så dårlig og vi så ut som vi kunne ha vunnet kampen, men denne amerikanske (hard-court) sesongen steg vi i rangeringen og det var mange øyeblikk som ga oss selvtillit, så vi vil fortsette å gjøre det. vårt beste i den asiatiske sesongen,» skrev Nishioka. «Først av alt, jeg gleder meg til å se alle på Davis Cup.»
Kecmanović møter den 18.-seedede italienske Lorenzo Musetti i andre runde onsdag.
