Pasienter som tok vekttapsmedisinen semaglutid hadde mindre sannsynlighet for å dø av COVID-19, ifølge en fersk studie.
Pasientene som fikk COVID-19 mens de brukte en ukentlig 2,4 mg dose semaglutid, den aktive ingrediensen i Novo Nordisks Wegovy og Ozempic, hadde en 34 % lavere risiko for å dø av COVID-19, ifølge Dr. Benjamin M. Scirica, en av forfatterne av studien publisert av Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).
Omtrent 17 604 pasienter ble studert i løpet av den over tre år lange studien som hadde tidligere kardiovaskulær sykdom og var overvektige eller overvektige, men som ikke hadde diabetes.
Dette er ikke første gang forskere har oppdaget andre fordeler med dette stoffet, som har økt i popularitet de siste årene på grunn av dets vekttapseffekter.
For eksempel ble Wegovy godkjent for bruk som hjertesykdomsforebyggende medisin tidligere i år etter at en studie viste at stoffet reduserte risikoen for alvorlige hjerteproblemer med 20 %.
Morgan Stanley estimerte at det globale markedet for fedmemedisiner kan øke med mer enn 15 ganger, og nå mellom 105 milliarder dollar og 144 milliarder dollar i 2030, «ettersom bruken av dem utvides utover vekttap for å behandle en rekke sykdommer.»
I 2023 var salget av merkede fedmemedisiner på 6 milliarder dollar.
Mark Purcell, leder for Morgan Stanleys europeiske farmasøytiske team, sa at ledende legemiddelprodusenter forventes å møte muligheten til å behandle et bredere spekter av sykdommer.
Morgan Stanley estimerte at 9% av befolkningen vil være på disse stoffene innen 2035, som er fem ganger antallet mennesker i dag.
