Joaquin Phoenix snakker ikke på sin plutselige avgang fra Todd Haynes’ NC-17 homofile detektiv-romantikkfilm – bare fem dager før filmen skulle starte innspillingen.
49-åringen ble spurt om sin kontroversielle exit under en pressekonferanse for hans kommende film,
«Joker: Folie à Deux» på filmfestivalen i Venezia onsdag.
«Jeg tror hvis jeg gjør det [speak about the reasoning]Jeg ville bare dele min mening fra mitt perspektiv, og de andre kreative er ikke her for å si sitt, og det føles bare ikke som det ville være riktig,» forklarte Phoenix.
«Jeg er ikke sikker på hvordan det ville være nyttig. Så jeg tror ikke jeg kommer til å gjøre det, la Oscar-vinneren til.
Filmen fra Haynes, 63, skulle begynne innspillingen i Guadalajara, Mexico, men Phoenix trakk støpslet mens han fortsatt var i Los Angeles, rapporterte IndieWire 9. august. Prosjektet uten tittel – om en mann som flykter sør for den amerikanske grensen med sin mannlige kjæreste – ble utviklet av Haynes, Phoenix og forfatter Jon Raymond.
Filmen har siden blitt skrinlagt på ubestemt tid etter at økonomi begynte å skape en potensiell produksjonssplitt.
«Joaquin presset meg videre og sa: ‘Nei, la oss gå videre.’ Dette blir en NC-17-film, sa Haynes til IndieWire før filmen ble avviklet. “Hele opplevelsen ble tilskyndet av Joaquin. Det ble tilskyndet av hans vågale, hans ønske om å presse gjennom barrierer og å virkelig komme inn på de ubehagelige stedene med dette forholdet. Og likevel føltes det som en veldig organisk prosess.»
Per IndieWire, filmskaperen sies å gå videre til sitt neste prosjekt, «Trust», sammen med Raymond, 53.
Deadline rapporterte at filmen ble skrotet i sin helhet bare to uker etter at Phoenix skilte lag med produksjonen. Hele produksjonen ble liggende i limbo på grunn av skuespillerens raske tilbaketrekning. Selv om produsentene prøvde å holde prosjektet sammen, kom de angivelig til kort.
I følge Variety forrige måned var alle settene allerede bygget på stedet, og besetningsmedlemmer er nå utelatt uten arbeid og må betales. Produksjonstapet er potensielt over syv tall.
En kilde i nærheten av filmen fortalte til uttaket at Phoenix-stjernen fikk «kalde føtter». Per Page Six hevdet en kilde at «filmens tema var en faktor.»
Andre innsidere forteller en annen historie, og antyder at det ikke er tilfelle siden Phoenix var den som brakte Haynes ideen i utgangspunktet og ønsket å presse konvolutten.
«Hill Street Blues»-alunen skulle spille mot Danny Ramirez («Top Gun: Maverick»), som signerte prosjektet i juli. Den 31 år gamle skuespilleren var nylig på Comic-Con for å promotere Marvels «Captain America: Brave New World».
