Snapchat er en primær plattform for online rovdyr som bruker «sextortion»-ordninger for å tvinge mindreårige til å sende grafiske bilder og videoer av seg selv og deretter bruke det eksplisitte materialet som utpressing, ifølge et søksmål anlagt av New Mexico.
Riksadvokat Raúl Torrez kunngjorde torsdag at kontoret hans har tatt rettslige skritt mot Snapchat-morselskapet Snap etter en måneder lang etterforskning.
Torrez påsto at Snapchat – en fotodelingsapp som er veldig populær blant tenåringer og unge brukere som er kjent for meldinger som forsvinner i løpet av 24 timer – har retningslinjer og designfunksjoner som letter deling og distribusjon av materiale om seksuell utnyttelse av barn.
«Snap har villedet brukere til å tro at bilder og videoer sendt på plattformen deres vil forsvinne, men rovdyr kan fange dette innholdet permanent, og de har laget en virtuell årbok med seksuelle bilder av barn som handles, selges og lagres på ubestemt tid,» sa Torrez i en uttalelse.
Etterforskningen av New Mexicos justisdepartement brukte en lokkedue Snapchat-konto som utgir seg for å være en 14 år gammel jente ved navn «Heather», som fortsatte å utveksle meldinger med en konto kalt «child.rape» og andre med eksplisitte navn.
Etterforskere fant også 10 000 poster relatert til Snap og seksuelt misbruk av barn på mørke nettsteder, og sa at Snapchat var «den klart største kilden til bilder og videoer blant de mørke nettsidene som ble undersøkt.»
En talsperson for Snap sa at selskapet «mottok New Mexico Attorney Generals klage» og «gjennomgikk den nøye.»
Snap «vil svare på disse påstandene i retten,» sa talspersonen til The Post, og la til: «Vi deler riksadvokat Torrez og publikums bekymringer om nettsikkerheten til unge mennesker og er dypt forpliktet til at Snapchat skal være et trygt og positivt sted for våre hele fellesskapet, spesielt for våre yngre brukere.»
Selskapets representant sa at det har «arbeidet flittig for å finne, fjerne og rapportere dårlige skuespillere, utdanne samfunnet vårt og gi tenåringer, så vel som foreldre og foresatte, verktøy for å hjelpe dem med å være trygge på nettet.»
«Vi forstår at online trusler fortsetter å utvikle seg, og vi vil fortsette å jobbe hardt for å løse disse kritiske problemene. Vi har investert hundrevis av millioner av dollar i våre tillits- og sikkerhetsteam i løpet av de siste årene, og designet vår tjeneste for å fremme nettsikkerhet ved å moderere innhold og muliggjøre direktemeldinger med nære venner og familie, sa talspersonen.
I desember i fjor anla New Mexico søksmål mot Meta Platforms med påstand om at deres sosiale medienettverk Facebook og Instagram ikke klarte å beskytte mindreårige brukere mot voksent sexinnhold og forstyrrende meldinger fra påståtte barnerovdyr – inkludert «bilder og videoer av kjønnsorganer» og sekssifrede tilbud til stjerne i pornofilmer.
Statlige etterforskere brukte en lignende lekebok i etterforskningen av Meta. De opprettet testkontoer på de Meta-eide sosiale mediesidene for fire fiktive barn ved å bruke AI-genererte bilder som angivelig portretterte barn i alderen 14 år eller yngre.
«Meta har tillatt Facebook og Instagram å bli en markedsplass for rovdyr på jakt etter barn som de kan tære på,» ifølge klagen, som hevdet teknologigiganten grunnlagt av Mark Zuckerberg for å ha engasjert seg i oppførsel som var «uakseptabel» og «ulovlig. ”
Selskapet har hevdet at det gjør omfattende innsats for å beskytte unge brukere mot skade.
«Vi bruker sofistikert teknologi, ansetter barnesikkerhetseksperter, rapporterer innhold til National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, og deler informasjon og verktøy med andre selskaper og rettshåndhevelse, inkludert statsadvokater, for å hjelpe med å utrydde rovdyr,» sa Meta i en uttalelse.
I juli sa Meta at de fjernet rundt 63 000 Instagram-kontoer i Nigeria som forsøkte å engasjere seg i «svindel»-svindel, hovedsakelig rettet mot voksne menn og noen barn i USA.
Innenfor disse 63 000 kontoene sa Meta at de identifiserte et nettverk av 2500 kontoer drevet av en gruppe på 20 individer som «målrettet primært voksne menn i USA og brukte falske kontoer for å maskere identiteten deres.»
