Det amerikanske arbeidsmarkedet svekket seg i forrige måned ettersom arbeidsgivere bare la til 142 000 jobber i august – godt under analytikerestimatene på 161 000.
Aksjefutures stupte før åpningen på fredag da Arbeidsdepartementet også utstedte nedjusteringer fra juli – da økonomien bare la til 89 000 i motsetning til de opprinnelig rapporterte 114 000.
Samtidig tikket arbeidsledigheten ned til 4,2 %.
I det scenariet kan Fed søke å levere en stimulans med et større rentekutt enn vanlig på et halvt prosentpoeng når den møtes senere denne måneden.
En treg ansettelsesrapport vil også gi næring til tidligere president Donald Trumps påstander om at Biden-Harris-administrasjonen har overvåket en forverret økonomi.
Reduksjoner i Feds referanserente vil til slutt føre til lavere lånekostnader for en rekke forbruker- og bedriftslån, inkludert boliglån, billån og kredittkort.
Nyere økonomiske data har vært blandet, noe som øker viktigheten av jobbrapporten, som er blant de mer omfattende økonomiske øyeblikksbildene regjeringen utsteder.
Arbeidsdepartementet undersøker omtrent 119 000 bedrifter og offentlige etater og 60 000 husstander hver måned for å samle sysselsettingsdataene.
På den svakere siden annonserer bedrifter færre ledige stillinger, og færre arbeidere slutter for nye muligheter. I et sunt arbeidsmarked er det mer sannsynlig at arbeidere slutter, vanligvis for nye, høyere betalte muligheter.
Med fallende sluttplasser betyr det at færre jobber åpner seg for folk uten jobb.
Fed’s Beige Book, en samling anekdoter fra de 12 regionale Fed-bankene, rapporterte at mange arbeidsgivere så ut til å ha blitt mer kresne på hvem de ansatte i juli og august.
Og en undersøkelse fra Conference Board i august fant at andelen amerikanere som synes det er vanskelig å finne jobber har vært stigende, en trend som ofte har korrelert med høyere arbeidsledighet.
Samtidig økte forbruket, den viktigste driveren for økonomisk vekst i USA, i et sunt tempo i juli.
Og økonomien vokste med et solid 3% årlig tempo i april-juni kvartalet.
Fed-leder Jerome Powell har gjort det klart at han ikke ønsker å se at arbeidsmarkedet svekkes ytterligere.
Christopher Waller, et medlem av Feds styre, skal etter planen diskutere de økonomiske utsiktene i en tale ved University of Notre Dame senere fredag.
Waller, et innflytelsesrikt medlem av styret, kan gi innsikt i Feds neste trekk.
Betydelige rentekutt fra Fed kan anspore noen selskaper til å begynne å ansette raskere, sier noen arbeidsmarkedseksperter.
«Alle er litt i et holdemønster,» sa Becky Frankiewicz, president i Nord-Amerika hos bemanningsgiganten Manpower.
«Alle ser på møtet i midten av september for å frigjøre og begynne å bruke penger.»
