DEN SISTE SHOWGIRL

TORONTO — «Jeg tror jeg har forberedt meg hele livet for denne filmen», fortalte Pamela Anderson til et henrykt publikum etter hennes nye film fredag kveld.
«Baywatch»-stjernen har definitivt lagt ned timene for delen.
I «The Last Showgirl», som hadde verdenspremiere på Toronto International Film Festival, spiller Anderson hovedrollen som en 57 år gammel Las Vegas revydanser som er i ferd med å stå uten jobb.
Hennes gammeldagse show, klumpete hvis passende kalt «Le Razzle Dazzle», avsluttes etter 38 år på The Strip.
«En dinosaur,» kaller en annen showgirl det.
Og Pams Shelley har tatt på seg de samme rosa fjærene og gjort den samme smakfulle nakenkoreoen siden 1987. Hun vet ingenting annet.
Anderson har mye livserfaring å trekke fra for å spille stakkars Shelley. Prosjektene som gjorde henne berømt – «Baywatch», Playboy, «Home Improvement» – er i seg selv fra en svunnen tid med saktegående strandløp, latterspor og, um, papir.
Og mens hun tar seg inn i den dype følelsesbrønnen, er skuespillerinnen hjerteskjærende i den nydelige indieen regissert av Gia Coppola og med i hovedrollen Oscar-vinner Jamie Lee Curtis, Billie Lourd og Dave Bautista.
Det er nok et smart trekk i Pams rødglødende andre akt.
Tilbake i 2022 ble jeg positivt sjokkert da det ble annonsert at Anderson skulle debutere på Broadway som foxy Roxie Hart i musikalen «Chicago».
Besetningsskiftet kom ut av ingensteds. Og ingen visste om hun kunne synge eller danse. Men, som «The Last Showgirl», var sammenkoblingen bare fornuftig.
Morderinnen Roxie blir en tabloid-sensasjon som, mens han er i fengsel, ser flere blitzpærer enn soloppganger.
Pamela har ikke drept noen, antar jeg, men hun vet mer enn noen andre som noen gang har tatt på seg den rollen hvordan det er å bli nådeløst jaget av pressen. Den første natten hennes på 49th Street ble jeg imponert – det samme var det brølende publikummet.
«Det er noe å si om elektrisiteten som kommer fra ren kjærlighet til en skuespillerinne – spesielt hvis hun er i stand til å returnere den sjenerøst,» skrev jeg. «Og gutt, gjør hun det noen gang.»
Nå har Anderson gått fra Broadway til filmfestivalen i Toronto, der «Barb Wire» og «Raw Justice» absolutt ikke ville ha tatt seg ned på 1990-tallet.
Med den mye elegantere «Last Showgirl» utforsker Coppola og manusforfatter Kate Gersten Vegas som «Oceans 11» og «The Hangover» ikke tør å vandre – hotellarbeiderne, deres beskjedne og marmorfrie hjem, deres drømmer og ønsker.
Curtis er spesielt morsom som en brassy, spraybrun tidligere showgirl ved navn Annette, som nå er en kasinococktailservitør som kaller gamle gamblingavhengige kvinner «Zsa Zsa». Men når hun får sparken, implisitt for å være for gammel, hopper Annette opp på et bord og danser sakte til «Total Eclipse of the Heart». Det begynner morsomt og blir vakkert skjørt.
Anderson er like knusende under scener med Billie Lourd som hennes fremmedgjorte datter Hannah. Shelley ga jenta til en annen familie da hun ikke kunne forsørge henne, og nå som Hannah skal på college, dømmer hun moren sin for sine valg.
Og Kiernan Shipka og Brenda Song spiller Shelleys lysøyne unge rollebesetningskamerater, som lærer av feilene hennes mens de gjør sine egne.
Så perfekt en match som den er, er det én viktig forskjell mellom Anderson og hennes rike og relaterte karakter.
Shelley har ingen anelse om hva hun skal gjøre videre. Hun prøver å gå på audition for et nytt, mer søppelprogram, som går katastrofalt. Og hun vurderer å tenne opp en gammel flamme. Mer enn noe annet lengter hun etter et forhold til datteren.
Anderson har imidlertid full kontroll over denne uventede nye fasen i karrieren.
De siste valgene hennes på scenen og på skjermen har vært dristige og spennende, men, som alltid har vært sant for Pam, fylt med storslått blend.
