Tyrkias president Tayyip Erdogan sa lørdag at islamske land burde danne en allianse mot det han kalte «den økende trusselen om ekspansjonisme» fra Israel.
Han kom med kommentaren etter å ha beskrevet det palestinske og tyrkiske tjenestemenn sa var drapet av israelske tropper på en tyrkisk-amerikansk kvinne som deltok i en protest fredag mot utvidelse av bosetninger på den israelsk-okkuperte Vestbredden.
«Det eneste trinnet som vil stoppe israelsk arroganse, israelsk banditt og israelsk statsterrorisme er alliansen av islamske land,» sa Erdogan på et arrangement for islamske skoler i nærheten av Istanbul.
Han sa at nylige skritt som Tyrkia har tatt for å forbedre båndene med Egypt og Syria er rettet mot å «forme en solidaritetslinje mot den økende trusselen om ekspansjonisme», som han sa også truet Libanon og Syria.
Erdogan var vertskap for den egyptiske presidenten Abdel Fattah al-Sisi i Ankara denne uken, og de diskuterte Gaza-krigen og måter å reparere sine lenge frosne bånd på under det som var det første slike presidentbesøk på 12 år.
Båndene mellom dem begynte å tine i 2020 da Tyrkia begynte diplomatiske forsøk på å lette spenningen med fremmedgjorte regionale rivaler, inkludert De forente arabiske emirater og Saudi-Arabia.
Erdogan sa i juli at Tyrkia vil gi en invitasjon til Syrias president Bashar al-Assad «når som helst» for mulige samtaler for å gjenopprette forholdet mellom de to naboene, som brøt båndene i 2011 etter utbruddet av den syriske borgerkrigen.
Israel kommenterte ikke umiddelbart Erdogans uttalelser lørdag.
Israels militær sa etter fredagens hendelse at de undersøkte rapporter om at en kvinnelig utenlandsk statsborger «ble drept som følge av skudd avfyrt i området. Detaljene rundt hendelsen og omstendighetene der hun ble truffet er under vurdering.
Det var ingen umiddelbar kommentar til fredagens hendelse fra Israels statsminister Benjamin Netanyahus kontor.
