Politikere på Long Island ber statlige valgfunksjonærer undersøke hvordan et dusin Nassau- og Suffolk-familier endte opp med å motta brev fra to statlige senatorer, som takker sine døde slektninger for å ha registrert seg for å stemme i det kommende valget.
Takknemlighetsbrevene ble sendt fra kontorene til den republikanske statssenatoren Jack Martins og Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, som representerer ulike deler av Nassau County. Pårørende mottok meldingene den siste uken i august.
«Jeg får post til moren min, så det er ikke en overraskelse for meg å motta brev til henne,» sa Erin Molyneux, som bor i Port Washington, til The Post. «Men jeg ble overrasket over at jeg så at det var fra vår statssenator, gratulerte henne med registreringen, og tenkte: ‘Dette er ikke riktig’.»
For å gjøre ting mer forvirrende ringte Molyneux til statens valgstyre og fikk vite at morens navn ikke var på stemmelisten.
Molyneux sa at moren hans, Sang Harrison, bodde mesteparten av livet i Georgia, og aldri hadde en faktisk adresse i New York. Harrison, som var dødssyk, var bare noen gang i New York de siste 10 dagene av livet hennes i januar 2023.
«Den virkelige bekymringen jeg hadde var, er hun et offer for identitetstyveri? Jeg vil ikke ha hennes navn og rykte knyttet til valgsvindelordninger, sa Molyneux. «Jeg vil ikke at min mors navn skal knyttes til noen historie om at hun stemte fra graven. eller noen stemmer i hennes navn.»
I brev til statsinspektøren og departementet for valghåndhevelse sa Nassau County Legislature Minoritetsleder Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D, Port Washington) at gratulasjonsnotatene «forårsaket betydelig nød for familiene til den avdøde.»
Enda mer urovekkende, fortsatte hun, inneholdt i brevene, «er det faktum at mange av de avdøde personene det refereres til i disse brevene aldri hadde registrert seg for å stemme i staten New York, noe som reiste alvorlige spørsmål om kilden til dataene som ble brukt av disse senatorene.
«Det ser ut til at myndighetenes ressurser kan ha blitt upassende brukt til å sette sammen disse feilaktige e-postlistene, spesielt rett før et stort presidentvalg.»
Hun konkluderte i brevene sine at Martins og Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick kan ha brutt «flere bestemmelser
av New York State lover og etikkstandarder.»
Martins kunne ikke nås for kommentar lørdag, men sa under en pressekonferanse fredag at han mottok listen over nye velgere fra statens valgstyre.
Valgstyret mottok imidlertid at han ikke kunne ha mottatt Harrisons navn fra dem, siden det ikke er noen person med det navnet i den statlige velgerdatabasen.
Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick kunne heller ikke nås for kommentar lørdag.
