Når vi går inn i høsten, og filmer som vinner til priser er i ferd med å komme på kino som så mange brune blader, har feel-good-filmer vært ganske tynne på bakken.
Å stoppe trenden er «Unstoppable», en inspirerende sann historie med en seriøst talentfull ung skuespiller ved navn Jharrel Jerome som hadde premiere fredag kveld på Toronto International Film Festival.
26-åringen spiller Anthony Robles, NCAA-mesterbryteren som ble født med ett ben, men som likevel klatret til toppen av sporten sin. Filmen hans, med Jennifer Lopez i hovedrollen som Anthonys hardtarbeidende mor Judy, er en veritabel tårefabrikk.
Du vet hva du går for når, etter å ha vunnet et nasjonalt videregående mesterskap i Philadelphia i starten av filmen, tenåringen Anthony stille dukker ut av en bankett for å feire ham.
«Noen burde fortelle ham at han vant,» sier en rekrutterer på college.
Den ydmyke gutten, som alltid nektet å bruke benprotese, går i stedet alene til Philadelphia Museum of Art og stirrer på monumentet til sitt fiktive idol, Rocky Balboa.
Det er den typen underdog-fortelling «Unstoppable» ønsker å være – en der heltens kamper i hjemmet ikke kan skilles fra konkurransens topper og daler. En der Adrian betyr like mye som Creed.
Anthonys versjon av disse trinnene er forresten et fjell i Arizona hvor han deltok på ASU som en walk-on uten noen garantert plass på laget.
Bestemt løper han opp de bratte steinene med krykker sammen med andre brytere. Da han nådde toppen var det et av mange seiersøyeblikk som fikk applaus fredag.
Fysisk et beist, det Robles mest av alt måtte overvinne var tvilen til de rundt ham.
Treneren hans, spilt av Don Cheadle, er i utgangspunktet skeptisk til Anthony, men kommer etter at han har sett hans driv og evner.
Ustanselig i hennes tro er imidlertid Judy, spilt av Lopez i en av hennes beste prestasjoner på et minutt. Hennes bue som en slitende mor til flere barn er like engasjerende som Anthonys og får sin rette.
Lopez er heldig som har scenepartnere like givende som Jerome og Bobby Cannavale som hennes voldelige ektemann Rick.
«Unstoppable» markerer regidebuten til William Goldenberg, som også redigerte Michael Jordan joggesko-sensasjonen «Air». Han har en evne til å få klisjeene og sentimentaliteten til sportsbiografier til å ikke føles så, vel, klisjefylte og sentimentale. Jeg følte ikke at jeg trengte en dusj da det var over.
Og Goldenberg gjør bryting – som ikke har de filmatiske slagene boksing kan skryte av – overbevisende å se på.
Imidlertid får regissøren en fantastisk prestasjon av Jerome, som forhindrer «Unstoppable» fra å falle i fellene som så mange atletisk garn gjør.
Jerome, eksploderende av selvtillit, aldri skrik eller showbåter. Hans lidenskapelige blikk er ikke en utdannet Hollywood-skuespiller, men en veldig ekte student som er bekymret for familien sin mens han vokser opp for fort.
Det kommer til å skje store ting for Jerome.
For en glede det er å se et ungt talent som allerede bestiger fjellet.
