Da en sperring på mer enn 30 raketter sprengt fra Libanon regnet ned over Nord-Israel lørdag, ba lederne av CIA og Storbritannias MI6 i fellesskap om en gissel- og våpenhvileavtale i den pågående krigen med Hamas.
«Våre tjenester jobber ustanselig for å oppnå en våpenhvile- og gisselavtale i Gaza, som kan få slutt på lidelsene og det forferdelige tapet av liv til palestinske sivile og bringe hjem gislene etter 11 måneders helvetes innesperring av Hamas», sier Bill Burns, direktør for organisasjonen. CIA, og Richard Moore, sjef for UK Secret Intelligence Service, også kjent som MI6, skrev i en spalte for Financial Times.
Burns og Moore la vekt på partnerskapet mellom de allierte landene midt i en «rekke av trusler» inkludert fra Russland, Kina og i Midtøsten – den verste siden den kalde krigen.
«Vi fortsetter å jobbe sammen for å redusere spenningen i regionen,» skrev de.
Senere på lørdag dukket de to opp enestående sammen på et Financial Times-arrangement og diskuterte videre den internasjonale verdensordenen.
En mer detaljert våpenhvileavtale i Israel-Hamas-krigen kan nås i løpet av de neste dagene, sa Burns, mens USA samarbeider med meklere i Egypt og Qatar for å forbedre et rammeverk som ble foreslått av president Biden i mai. Burns la til at suksessen ville være et spørsmål om «politisk vilje.»
Spalten ble publisert timer før hundretusenvis av israelere igjen deltok i protester i Tel Aviv og Jerusalem som ba om en avtale for å bringe gislene hjem. En massiv demonstrasjon fant også sted lørdag i London som ba om våpenhvile.
Protestene fant sted kort tid etter at en ny meningsmåling fant at et flertall av israelere ønsker at en gisselavtale skal ha forrang over IDF-tropper som er igjen i stripen mellom Gaza og Egypt, som Israels statsminister Benjamin Netanyahu angivelig har insistert på.
61 prosent av de spurte sa at de ikke tror at regjeringen gjør alt den kan for å bringe gislene hjem, ifølge meningsmålingen fra Israels Channel 12 News.
Tidligere lørdag rapporterte den israelske hæren at 30 raketter avfyrt fra Libanon falt i nord i nærheten av Galilea og at troppene snappet opp minst to andre, men at det ikke var noen personskader.
Iran-fullmektig Hizbollah, som slo seg sammen med Hamas kort tid etter terrorangrepene mot Israel 7. oktober, bekreftet at de skjøt rakettene, ifølge rapporter.
Som svar sa IDF at de angrep en rakettoppskytingsplattform fra Hizbollah i Sør-Libanon.
Flere raketter ble skutt mot Israel fra Libanon i august enn noen tidligere måned siden krigen begynte, ifølge data publisert av sikkerhetsbyrået Shin Bet, rapporterte Times of Israel.
MI 6s Moore sa også at han tror Iran fortsatt planlegger å gjengjelde Israel for drapet på Hamas-leder Ismail Haniyeh i Teheran 30. juli.
Palestinske myndigheter kunngjorde lørdag at minst åtte mennesker ble drept og 15 ble såret i et israelsk angrep på en skolebygning, som IDF sa var rettet mot et Hamas-kommandosenter inne i komplekset.
IDF kunngjorde at de ville endre sin kamptaktikk i Gaza-tunnelene for å forhindre drapet på flere gisler som holdes der av Hamas, ifølge rapporter.
