Kamala Harris og Donald Trump svinger kraftig i hvordan de ruster seg opp til tirsdagens presidentdebatt, og setter opp et oppgjør som ikke bare reflekterer to separate visjoner for landet, men to politikere som nærmer seg store øyeblikk svært forskjellig.
Visepresidenten sitter inne på et historisk hotell i sentrum av Pittsburgh hvor hun kan fokusere på å finpusse skarpe svar på to minutter, i henhold til debattens regler. Hun har jobbet med medhjelpere siden torsdag og valgte et sted som gir den demokratiske nominerte muligheten til å blande seg med velgere fra swing-state.
Trump, den republikanske nominerte, avviser offentlig verdien av å studere for debatten. Den tidligere presidenten velger i stedet å fylle dagene med kampanjerelaterte hendelser med forutsetningen om at han vet hva han trenger å gjøre når han går på debattscenen ved National Constitution Center i Philadelphia.
«Du kan gå inn med all den strategien du vil, men du må liksom føle det ettersom debatten finner sted,» sa han under et rådhus med Fox News-vert Sean Hannity.
Trump siterte deretter den tidligere boksefantasten Mike Tyson, som sa: «Alle har en plan til de får et slag i ansiktet.»
Harris har sagt at hun er forberedt på at Trump skal rasle fra seg fornærmelser og feilrepresentere fakta, selv om kampanjen hennes har sett verdi i å fokusere på middelklassen og utsiktene til en bedre fremtid for landet.
«Vi bør være forberedt på det faktum at han ikke er tynget av å fortelle sannheten,» sa Harris i et radiointervju for Rickey Smiley Morning Show. «Han har en tendens til å kjempe for seg selv, ikke for det amerikanske folket, og jeg tror det kommer til å komme ut i løpet av debatten.»
I sin egen forberedelse har Harris den demokratiske konsulenten Philippe Reines, en mangeårig medhjelper til Hillary Clinton, som portretterer Trump. Hun liker å beskrive Trump som å ha en «spillebok» med usannheter å gå etter demokrater som Clinton og tidligere president Barack Obama.
Harris har sagt at hun forstår Trump på et dypere psykologisk nivå. Hun har forsøkt i taler som hennes uttalelser på den demokratiske nasjonale konvensjonen å vise at hun ville være en sterkere leder enn ham – et argument som går mot Trumps eget ønske om å projisere og vise styrke.
Trumps debatt mot president Joe Biden 27. juni rystet valget, med Bidens katastrofale prestasjon som til slutt førte til at han trakk seg til side som den demokratiske nominerte og støttet Harris. Begge kampanjene vet at det første møtet mellom Harris og Trump kan bli en avgjørende begivenhet i et tett løp.
Trump kritiserer preventivt ABC News debattmoderatorer, og hevder at han ikke vil bli behandlet rettferdig. Men han sa at han planlegger å la Harris snakke, akkurat som han gjorde under debatten med Biden.
«Jeg lot ham snakke. Jeg skal la henne snakke,” sa han under Hannity rådhus.
Trump-hjelpere sa at denne gangen ikke ville være annerledes enn den forrige debatten, og at den tidligere presidenten ikke ville gjøre noen mer tradisjonelle forberedelser. Det er ingen stand-ins, ingen sett, ingen skuespill.
I stedet peker de på Trumps hyppige intervjuer, inkludert å ta spørsmål på lange pressekonferanser, sitte på timelange podcaster og delta i rådhus med vennlige verter som Hannity.
Trump møter også jevnlig politiske rådgivere som er eksperter på saker som kan dukke opp under debatten. Under disse uformelle sesjonene snakker de om problemene, Trumps politikk mens han var i embetet, og planene han har lagt frem for en andre periode.
«Jeg har møter om det. Vi snakker om det. Men det er ikke mye du kan gjøre. Enten kan du faget ditt eller ikke. Enten har du god politikk eller ikke,» sa han i et radiointervju i New Hampshire.
Før den siste debatten holdt Trump møter med bemerkelsesverdige republikanere som Florida-senator Marco Rubio, som på det tidspunktet var under vurdering for å være Trumps visepresidentvalg. Denne gangen har han holdt sesjoner med Tulsi Gabbard, den tidligere demokratiske kongresskvinnen og demokratiske presidentkandidaten som nå støtter Trump.
Gabbard, som også nå er medlem av Trumps overgangsteam, ble hentet inn spesifikt for å hjelpe Trump denne gangen fordi hun kjenner Harris, etter å ha diskutert henne da de to stilte for den demokratiske nominasjonen i 2020. Hun var også vertskap for et nylig rådhus med Trump i Wisconsin.
Trump, insisterer medhjelpere, har til hensikt å sette Harris på defensiven. Han ønsker å fremstille henne som for liberal når han prøver å knytte henne til Bidens økonomiske rekord og påpeker hennes reverseringer i saker som et fracking-forbud som hun ikke lenger støtter.
«Vi ser frem til muligheten for amerikanere til å se henne på scenen, ute av stand til å forsvare hennes politikk og flip-flops,» sa Trumps kampanjetalskvinne Karoline Leavitt. «Presidenten har bevist at han har kontroll over sakene, det har hun ikke.»
Harris’ team mener at Trump vil fremstå som ekstrem og at de kan bruke debatten som et springbrett for å bygge videre på momentumet som hennes korte kampanje har skapt. Kampanjen planlegger å bruke førdebatthelgen til å holde 2000 arrangementer med frivillige og nå mer enn én million velgere.
«Med hundrevis av kontorer og tusenvis av ansatte på tvers av slagmarkene, er vi i stand til å utnytte all buzz rundt debatten og bryte gjennom til vanskelig tilgjengelige velgere,» sa Dan Kanninen, kampanjens slagmarksdirektør, i en uttalelse.
