McDonald’s ruller ut en ny digital kiosk som kan ta imot kontanter og spytte ut vekslepenger – et grep som kan bane vei for hurtigmatgiganten til å fjerne behovet for menneskelige kasserere.
Verdens største burgerkjede hadde installert selvbestillingsskjermer som godtok kredittkortbetalinger på de fleste av sine lokasjoner i 2020, men disse kioskene krevde fortsatt kontantbetalende kunder for å fullføre kjøpene sine ved skranken.
De nye kontantkioskene – som har vært utplassert på bare noen få restauranter så langt – vil tillate Big Mac-elskere å omgå denne prosessen, ifølge Bloomberg, som først rapporterte historien.
«Disse endringene lar franchisetakere møte våre kunders økte ønske om digitale alternativer, samtidig som de forbedrer hastighet og nøyaktighet,» sa en talsperson for McDonald’s til The Post onsdag.
Skjermer bak disken på McDonald’s-lokasjoner viser vanligvis hele menyen. Nå vil de fremheve utvalgte varer og oppmuntre gjester til å bestille ved selvbrukskioskene eller på McDonald’s-appen, sa selskapet.
Pengekioskene er valgfrie for selskapets franchisetakere – som eier og administrerer rundt 95 % av de rundt 14 300 McDonald’s-lokasjonene i USA.
Mindre enn 2% av disse franchisetakerne har valgt å bruke de nye kioskene og skjermene så langt, sa McDonald’s USA til The Post.
Selskapet, som sysselsetter rundt 2 millioner arbeidere, sa at det ikke har noen tidslinje for en utbredt utrulling.
De nye skjermene vil ikke resultere i nedskjæringer, insisterte McDonald’s-talspersonen.
I stedet vil kasserere bli tildelt andre roller som å bringe mat til kunder som har bestilt på nettet eller å lede forbedringer av «gjesteopplevelse».
Men det er fortsatt bekymring for at det fortsatte presset mot automatisering vil gjøre kassererroller foreldet i fremtiden – spesielt i kjølvannet av Californias oppgang til minimumslønnen for fastfoodarbeidere til $20 i timen.
Taco Bell og Panera har brukt lignende selvbestillingsskjermer på restaurantene sine.
Kunder har omfavnet disse nye alternativene, som kan fremskynde ventetidene og belønne lojale appkunder med rabatter og andre fordeler.
McDonald’s har høstet fordelene, siden mobilappkunder har en tendens til å være mer lojale mot selskaper og kjøpe flere tilleggsprogrammer som pommes frites med bestillingene sine.
Bestillinger gjort gjennom appen, selvbestillingsskjermer eller en leveringstjeneste utgjorde mer enn 40 % av McDonald’s-salget i toppmarkedene i fjorårets tredje kvartal, sa selskapet.
«Digital kommer til å fortsette å vokse for oss,» sa McDonald’s-sjef Chris Kempczinski til analytikere i juli. «Vi kommer til å få flere og flere kunder på vår digitale plattform.»
