To av Wall Streets største banker planlegger angivelig å begrense antall timer juniorbankfolk jobber per uke i kjølvannet av raseri over det tragiske dødsfallet til en 35 år gammel medarbeider i Bank of America som registrerte 100-timers arbeidsuker .
Bank of America – som ble undersøkt etter at ansatt og tidligere Green Beret Leo Lukenas III fikk et dødelig hjerteinfarkt i mai – setter på plass et nytt tidtakingsverktøy som krever at juniorbankfolk spesifiserer hvordan tiden deres brukes, The Wall Street Journal meldte torsdag.
JPMorgan vil begrense juniorbankers arbeidstid til 80 per uke – de første grensene vedtatt av landets største långiver – med unntak som skal gjøres i visse tilfeller, for eksempel en direkteavtale, ifølge The Journal.
Bevegelsene kommer etter at The Journal publiserte en omfattende avsløring som beskriver hvordan Bank of America-ledere ba direkterapporter lyve om deres omfattende arbeidstid, selv når de overskred en 80-timers grense som ble satt på plass for mer enn et tiår siden etter døden til en overarbeidet turnuskandidat.
Bank of Americas nye tidsregistreringsverktøy, som banken sa ble utviklet før Lukenas’ død 2. mai, skal etter planen gå live neste uke, rapporterte The Journal.
Programvaren vil kreve at junior investeringsbankfolk i USA logger timer daglig i stedet for ukentlig.
Juniorbankfolkene vil også bli pålagt å spesifisere hvilke avtaler de jobber med og når de jobber med dem, samt navnene på lederne som fører tilsyn med oppdragene deres, rapporterte The Journal.
Juniorbankfolk vil kunne sette karakter på en skala fra 1 til 4 hvor stor kapasitet de har til mer arbeid, ifølge avisen.
The Post kontaktet Bank of America for kommentar.
JPMorgans juniorbankfolk har selvrapportert timene sine gjennom timelister i årevis og er garantert en helgfri hver tredje måned. De kan heller ikke kalles inn på jobb fra klokken 18 fredag til middag lørdag.
Seniorbankfolk har kommunisert de nye retningslinjene til ansatte de siste ukene, ifølge The Journal. Den nye ukentlige taksten er den samme som New York State-grensen for timer med medisinske beboere.
JPMorgan nektet å kommentere da han ble nådd av The Post.
I mai sa JPMorgan-sjef Jamie Dimon at landets største utlåner spurte «hva kan vi lære» av Lukenas’ død.
Den gifte faren til to små barn døde av det medisinske undersøkere fastslo var akutt koronararterietrombose – dager etter å ha jobbet på et team som fullførte en fusjon på 2 milliarder dollar.
Like før hans død lette Lukenas etter en ny jobb på grunn av sliten fra å logge minst 16 timer hver dag, som The Post tidligere rapporterte.
Selv om det ikke er noen direkte bevis som tyder på at arbeidet hans hadde noe å gjøre med hans død, har en rekke studier knyttet akutt stress til trombose.
– Vi er veldig triste over tapet av lagkameraten vår. Vi fortsetter å fokusere på å gjøre det vi kan for å støtte familien og teamet vårt, spesielt de som jobbet tett med ham, sa BoA-talspersonen til The Post den gang.
Banken vedtok en 80-timers tak i 2013 etter døden til Moritz Erhardt, en 21 år gammel praktikant ved kontoret i London. Han døde etter å ha jobbet til klokken 06.00 tre netter på rad.
Journalens undersøkelse fant imidlertid at yngre ansatte rutinemessig brøt grensene og ble bedt om å lyve til veiledere om overdreven arbeidsbelastning.
Flere ansatte klaget til Journal om utmattende arbeidsplaner som resulterte i helseplager og sykehusinnleggelser for en rekke stressrelaterte forhold.
En talsperson for Bank of America sa til Journal at «praksisen vår er tydelig og vi forventer at alle ansatte inkludert ledere følger dem. Når vi har fått vite om brudd, har disiplinære tiltak blitt iverksatt.»
To uker etter Lukenas’ død døde en annen Bank of America-forhandler i London, 25 år gamle Adnan Deumic, plutselig etter å ha kollapset i en veldedighetsfotballkamp to uker senere.
Dødsårsaken ble antatt å være hjertestans.
