Strekk ut hånden og ta på noen – bokstavelig talt.
Et banebrytende medisinsk utstyr som kan simulere den «naturlige», «virkelige» følelsen av menneskelig berøring, tilbys som en kur mot isolasjon – og kan tillate kjære å nyte følelsen av fysisk kontakt, selv om de er kontinenter fra hverandre.
Forskere ved University College London (UCL) har skapt den bærbare teknologien – en liten silikonfingertuppkobling kalt et innovativt bioinspirert haptisk system (BAMH) – for å pares med en liten maskin som bruker vibrasjoner for å stimulere nerveceller, rapporterte The Independent.
Forsker Dr. Sara Abad forklarte hvordan enheten kan brukes til å gi følelsen av å holde i hånden for ekstern omfavnelse, «inkorporere berøring i våre virtuelle sosiale interaksjoner.»
«For eksempel, med pandemien og globaliseringen, er det veldig sannsynlig at du har familie som ikke bor i samme by som deg,» sa Abad. «For sosial binding, som er viktig, trenger du berøring, men videosamtaler gir ikke det.»
Mens fire sentrale stimuli nerveceller kan aktiveres for å gi en bruker en «realistisk følelse av berøring», er det også andre fascinerende potensielle bruksområder for teknologien.
I robotstøttede operasjoner kan for eksempel BAMH skanne og analysere om de jobber med hudvev som viser indikasjoner på kreft. Det kan også brukes i behandlingen av metakarpaltunnelsyndrom. Den kan også en dag brukes til å håndtere radioaktivt materiale på avstand.
Deretter ønsker forskere å utvide sin eksperimentelle gruppe i en klinisk studie – alt for å lære mer om hvordan folk kan miste følelsen av berøring over tid.
Forskerne ønsker å rekruttere minst 10 personer som opplever tap av følelse til en klinisk studie i løpet av de neste månedene for å forstå mer om hvordan berøringssansen forringes over tid.
«Vi ønsker å forstå [if] kan vi oppdage, over noen tid en forringelse i [touch] følsomhet, sa professor Helge Wurdemann.
«Og så ønsker vi å sende disse dataene tilbake til klinikeren for så å forstå om de kan, kanskje ta i bruk terapien deres for å bremse tapet i (berørings)oppfatning.»
