Google er i ferd med å slette et stort antall Gmail-kontoer. Slik unngår du å miste din.
Nettgiganten begynte å slette kontoer i desember i fjor hvis de ikke hadde vært brukt på to år, etter å ha annonsert sine oppdaterte retningslinjer for inaktive kontoer i mai.
Alle Google-kontoer som ikke har vært brukt eller logget på på minst to år, kan nå slettes, inkludert innhold i Google Workspace – Gmail, Dokumenter, Disk, Meet og Kalender – og Google Foto.
Google sa at det ville ta en trinnvis tilnærming, og starter med kontoer som ble opprettet og aldri brukt igjen.
Google vil sende brukeren flere varsler i månedene frem til sletting, både til kontoens e-post og gjenopprettingsadressen hvis tilgjengelig.
«Den enkleste måten å holde en Google-konto aktiv på er å logge på minst én gang hvert annet år,» sa Googles VP for produktadministrasjon Ruth Kricheli i et blogginnlegg om sikkerhet og sikkerhet. «Hvis du nylig har logget på Google-kontoen din eller noen av tjenestene våre, anses kontoen din som aktiv og vil ikke bli slettet.»
Aktivitet kan omfatte en rekke typer handlinger når du logger på eller mens du er logget på en Google-konto, for eksempel å lese eller sende en e-post, bruke Google Disk, se en YouTube-video, laste ned en app i Google Play-butikken, bruke Google Søk eller ved å bruke Logg på med Google for å logge på en tredjepartsapp eller -tjeneste.
Hvis brukeren har et eksisterende abonnement satt opp via Google-kontoen sin, for eksempel Google One-skylagring, en nyhetspublikasjon eller en app, vurderer Google også denne kontoaktiviteten, og den vil ikke bli påvirket.
Brukere må imidlertid spesifikt logge på Google Foto hvert annet år for å unngå å få slettet bilder og annet innhold.
«I tillegg har vi ikke planer om å slette kontoer med YouTube-videoer for øyeblikket,» sa Kricheli.
Retningslinjene gjelder bare for personlige Google-kontoer, og påvirker ikke kontoer for organisasjoner som skoler eller bedrifter.
Google sa at endringen var for å redusere sikkerhetsrisikoen forbundet med kontokapring, ettersom kontoer som ikke har vært brukt på en lengre periode er mer sannsynlig å bli kompromittert.
«Dette er fordi glemte eller uovervåkede kontoer ofte er avhengige av gamle eller gjenbrukte passord som kan ha blitt kompromittert, ikke har satt opp tofaktorautentisering og mottar færre sikkerhetssjekker av brukeren,» sa Kricheli.
«Vår interne analyse viser at det er minst 10 ganger mindre sannsynlighet for at forlatte kontoer har to-trinns bekreftelse enn aktive kontoer. Dette betyr at disse kontoene ofte er sårbare, og når en konto først er kompromittert, kan den brukes til alt fra identitetstyveri til en vektor for uønsket eller til og med skadelig innhold, som spam.»
Mer enn 1,8 milliarder mennesker over hele verden bruker Gmail, som er den nest mest populære e-postleverandøren bak Apple.
Tjenesten ble først lansert i 2004 med én gigabyte lagringsplass, en enorm mengde for tiden.
«Denne oppdateringen tilpasser retningslinjene våre med bransjestandarder rundt oppbevaring og sletting av kontoer og begrenser også hvor lang tid Google oppbevarer ubrukte personopplysninger,» sa Kricheli.
«Vi kommer til å rulle dette ut sakte og forsiktig, med mye varsel.»
