Kamala Harris strakte sannheten om fordelene med hennes økonomiske politikk under hennes vanskelige debatt mot Donald Trump, ifølge en av titanene på Wall Street.
Goldman Sachs administrerende direktør David Solomon ropte ut den demokratiske presidentkandidaten for et krav hun kom med under tirsdagens oppgjør, der hun hevdet investeringsbankens analyse av planen hennes – og sa at visepresidenten blåste rapporten ut av proporsjoner.
Solomon påpekte at rapporten «kom fra en uavhengig analytiker» og at Harris utelot nøkkeldetaljer – inkludert at forskjellen på økonomien mellom de rivaliserende planene var «omtrent to tideler av 1 %.»
«Jeg tror dette blåste opp til noe som er større enn det det var ment å være,» sa Solomon til CNBC onsdag.
«Det rapporten gjorde, er at den så på en håndfull politiske spørsmål som har blitt lagt ut av begge sider, og den prøvde å modellere deres innvirkning på BNP-veksten,» forklarte Solomon. «Grunnen til at jeg sier at det har blitt gjort en større avtale med det, er det det viste, er at forskjellen mellom settene med retningslinjer som de har fremmet er omtrent to tideler av 1 %.»
Harris hadde malt sin visjon for økonomien til å være overlegen den tidligere presidentens.
«Jeg tilbyr det jeg beskriver som en mulighetsøkonomi, og de beste økonomene i vårt land, om ikke verden, har gjennomgått våre relative planer for fremtiden til Amerika,» sa hun under debatten.
«Det Goldman Sachs har sagt er at Donald Trumps plan ville gjøre økonomien verre, min ville styrke økonomien.»
Wall Street-investorer har uttrykt bekymring for at Harris’ foreslåtte selskapsskatteøkninger vil ramme bedriftens inntekter.
Hun har også foreslått å heve kapitalgevinstskatten, som hun hevder vil få investorer til å sette mer penger inn i små bedrifter og oppstart.
Analytikere har sagt at denne metoden vanligvis underleverer når det gjelder å øke statens inntekter.
Mens Trumps skatteforslag er ansett som bedre for bedrifter, bekymrer noen økonomer at planene hans kan varme opp inflasjonen og øke det nasjonale underskuddet.
