WATERTOWN, Wis. — Mens fylkesfunksjonærer skriver ut stemmesedlene sine og leverer dem til de mer enn 1800 kommunale funksjonærene som administrerer valget i Wisconsin, prøver Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fortsatt å få navnet sitt fra dem.
Kennedy anmeldte Wisconsin-fristen for uavhengige kandidater 6. august, men avsluttet sitt presidentvalg 25. august med å støtte tidligere president Donald Trump.
Wisconsin valgkommisjon fire dager senere avviste hans anmodning om å bli tatt av stemmeseddelen, med henvisning til delstatslov som sier at navnet på en person som legger inn nominasjonspapirer og kvalifiserer til å vises på stemmeseddelen «skal vises på stemmeseddelen unntatt i tilfelle dødsfall personen.»
Kennedy anla et søksmål som utfordret kommisjonens avgjørelse, og hevdet at statens lover ikke behandler tredjepartskandidater og kandidater fra større partier likt. Retten avviste anmodningen hans om foreløpig forføyning, og dommeren skal etter planen avsi en muntlig kjennelse tirsdag.
Fylkesfunksjonærer må levere stemmesedlene til kommunale funksjonærer innen neste dag, siden torsdag 19. september er fristen for å sende fraværende stemmesedler til velgere med forespørsler registrert til stortingsvalget.
Valgdirektør i Milwaukee County, Michelle Hawley, fortalte The Post at fylket har mer enn 600 000 stemmesedler å skrive ut, og de er allerede sendt til trykkeriet. Det ville koste rundt 80 000 dollar å trykke dem på nytt.
Hun sa at skriveren ikke har nok deler av den spesialiserte stemmeseddelen som kreves for å skrive ut stemmesedlene på nytt.
«Det ville ta et par dager å hente avisen, og vi ville aldri overholde våre lovbestemte frister,» advarte Hawley.
Det ville være en «stor utfordring» å trykke på nytt hvis domstolen dømmer til fordel for Kennedy, innrømmet hun.
Wisconsin Department of Justice ba Hawley om å sende inn dokumentasjon til retten i Kennedys sak angående hvilke skritt det måtte ta for å fjerne Kennedys navn fra de mer enn 524 versjonene av stemmesedlene fylket har.
Listen over bekymringer inkluderer én løsning – klistremerker som dekker navnet til RFK Jr. – som gjør opp stemmeautomatene, som har spesialiserte sensorer for å veie stemmesedlene.
«I Wisconsin har de fleste av kontoristene allerede gått på trykk,» sa Eau Claire County Clerk Sue McDonald til The Post. «Noen av våre [ballots] har allerede blitt sendt til kommunale funksjonærer.»
Noen kommuner «har allerede stemmesedler for hånden» og legger dem i konvolutter for sine stående fraværsstemmeforespørsler.
Kennedy sendte inn en begjæring om tillatelse til å anke i en ankedomstol i Waukesha County forrige uke, og ba retten om å «handle og handle raskt», og sa «han trenger at domstolen tar opp hans konstitusjonelle argumenter og tar ham fra stemmeseddelen.»
Hvis en gunstig kjennelse for Kennedy blir avsagt i løpet av de neste dagene, sa McDonald at landet hennes også ville måtte trykke stemmesedlene på nytt denne uken.
Noen kommunevalgfunksjonærer har allerede sendt den digitale stemmeseddelen til utenlandske og militære velgere.
Kennedy oppnår fortsatt 6% av Wisconsin-stemmene i en sammenstilling av alle presidentkandidatene i Marquette Law School-avstemningen som ble offentliggjort forrige uke. Undersøkelsen fant også at Kennedy var den mest kjente av tredjepartskandidatene på stemmeseddelen.
