Ordfører Eric Adams hevdet tirsdag at hverdagslige New York-beboere ikke bryr seg mye om de føderale sonderingene som er rettet mot øverste rådhus- og NYPD-tjenestemenn og de brå oppsigelsene til noen av hans viktigste medhjelpere.
Adams, spurte på sin ukentlige pressekonferanse om han forsto New Yorkers bekymringer om problemene, sa at byboere aldri uttrykte disse bekymringene til ansiktet hans og beskyldte media for å gjøre dem til et større problem enn de er med offentligheten.
«Nei, jeg forstår ikke,» sa han. «Hvis de hadde samme grad av bekymring, ville jeg sett det når jeg er i offentligheten.»
Adams kom med sin påstand kort tid etter at han lo av en Post-reporters relaterte spørsmål da han gikk inn i rådhuset.
Flere av hans allierte har blitt fanget i den potensielle korrupsjonsundersøkelsen, inkludert varaordfører for offentlig sikkerhet Phil Banks, brødrenes skolesjef David Banks og den pensjonerte MTA-offisielle sikkerhetskonsulenten Terence Banks, varaordfører Sheena Wright, tidligere NYPD-kommissær Edward Caban og Tim Pearson, en topprådgiver. Ingen er siktet.
Ordføreren erkjente til slutt etter gjentatte avhør mot slutten av pressekonferansen at newyorkere kanskje bryr seg litt om skandalene.
Men han foreslo likevel at de snakker mer om andre saker.
«New Yorkere er bekymret, fordi dette er bekymringsfullt, og vi ønsker å løse det,» sa han om skandalen.
Men «det jeg sier til deg om hverdagslige New Yorkere, de vil vite: ‘Eric, hva gjør du med sikkerheten til byen min, skolene, boligene, jobben min.» Det er øverst på agendaen deres fordi det er det jeg hører når jeg er ute i gatene. Det er det jeg hører når jeg er på rådhus. Det er det jeg hører når jeg er i kirkene, moskeen, synagogen. Det er det jeg hører, sa ordføreren.
Ordføreren brukte mesteparten av sin time og en halv lange pressekonferanse på å unnvike gjentatte ganger andre spørsmål om snøballproblemene som virvlet rundt rådhuset også.
«Vi kommer ikke til å bli distrahert, og en av distraksjonene er å svare på de samme spørsmålene om og om igjen og om igjen,» sa han.
Over de ofte omstridte spørsmål og svar, forsvarte Adams Pearsons kontroversielle arbeid med migrantkontrakter. Hizzoner beskrev også sitt tiår gamle forhold til Banks-familien.
Caban og byens sjefsadvokat, Lisa Zornberg, har trukket seg under skandalen.
Det har vært vokale oppfordringer til Adams om å kaste Phil Banks og Pearson – inkludert fra The Posts redaksjon.
Kilder har fortalt The Post at Zornbergs plutselige oppsigelse i helgen kom etter at hun anbefalte ordføreren at Banks og Pearson skulle forlate administrasjonen. Adams, under pressekonferansen, nektet å gi noen detaljer om det han kalte sine «private samtaler» med Zornberg.
Adams, da han ble spurt om The Post-redaksjonens krav om å sparke Banks og Pearson, smilte.
«Jeg tror de har en moderat pragmatisk tilnærming – de er ikke så idealistiske,» sa han.
«Og de banket meg opp fra tid til annen. Men når jeg leser den avisen, tror jeg de fikk fingrene på pulsen til hverdagslige arbeiderklassemennesker.
«Jeg er ikke enig i alt i The Post, og de er ikke enige i alt jeg gjør,» sa han, før han la til: «Det er en hel masse ting jeg har gjort som The Post sier at dette er riktig fyr for jobben.»
