Tidligere WNBA-stjerne Renee Montgomery delte en streng PSA til «ondskapsfulle» Caitlin Clark-stander etter at Angel Reese nylig anklaget noen av Fever-stjernens fans for å være rasistiske.
Montgomery – som vant to mesterskap med Lynx i sin 11 år lange WNBA-karriere og fortsatte med å bli medeier av Dream i 2021 – tok opp situasjonen som involverte fanbasene til All-Star-rookies, hvis college-rivalisering har smittet over på til ligaen.
«I dag vil jeg snakke om Caitlin Clark og hennes fanbase,» sa hun på sin «Montgomery & Co.» podcast tirsdag. «I tillegg til robotene, tror jeg ikke engang at noen av de falske fansen hennes ser spillet hennes engang. The Caitlin Clark stans har tatt på seg et eget liv … Hele denne PSA akkurat nå, den gjelder ikke for vanlige Caitlin basketball fans.
«… jeg snakker om en spesiell gruppe som er motivert av hat og ødeleggelse, og hvis det ikke er deg, så handler ikke dette om deg… Det virker ikke engang som om det handler om Caitlin med stansene… de er bare på sosiale medier media klar til å kjempe.
«… Det er ikke en representasjon av oss [a longtime WNBA fan]. For eksempel … en hardhendt Falcons-fan kan hate Saints, men de ville gått litt for langt hvis de lagde naken AI-bilder av Saints-spillere og deretter sendte dem til Saints-spillernes familier. Det er det Caitlin stans har gjort med Angel Reese.»
Montgomery, som hjalp til med å lede UConn til NCAA National Championship i 2009, tok opp den saken etter at Reese sa at hun var offer for falske AI-nakenbilder, drapstrusler og rasisme på sosiale medier.
«Det er OK å være en hater innen sport, hating i sport er en del av spillet,» sa Montgomery, som avsluttet sin WNBA-karriere med Dream etter å ha sittet ut 2020-sesongen for å fokusere på sosial reform og rettferdighet.
«Jeg liker når fansen vår er så engasjert og så lidenskapelig at de rett og slett ikke liker det andre laget. Men å være rasistisk, sexistisk og voldelig med ordene dine – kom igjen nå, hva gjør vi? … Det er ikke akseptabelt.»
Reese åpnet opp på problemet under en nylig episode av podcasten hennes.
«Det er egentlig bare fansen, fansen hennes, Iowa-fansen, nå Indiana-fansen … de rir for henne,» sa Reese under en nylig avlevering av podcasten hennes «Unapologetically Angel». «Og jeg respekterer det.
«Respektfullt, men noen ganger er det veldig respektløst. Jeg tror det er mye rasisme når det kommer til det. Og jeg tror ikke [Clark] står på noe av det.»
Reese fortsatte med å si at hun har mottatt drapstrusler.
«Folk har kommet ned til adressen min, fulgt meg hjem – det har kommet ned til det. [On] flere ganger har folk laget AI-bilder av meg, som naken, bokstavelig talt. De har sendt den til mine familiemedlemmer. Familiemedlemmene mine, onklene mine sender det til meg som «Åh, er du naken på Instagram?» sa Reese.
«Det er trist å se det, og det er veldig vanskelig at jeg må gå gjennom det og nå ser andre spillere måtte gå gjennom det. Men til syvende og sist er det et spill som vi begge elsker, men her er ingen hat [between us].»
Clark og Reeses college-rivalisering og popularitet har bidratt til å øke WNBAs rangeringer, inntekter og seertall, men noen fans har latt seg rive med.
Reese, som Sky valgte ut av LSU med nr. 7 overall i 2024 WNBA Draft, ble kåret til 2023 NCAA kvinners turnering mest fremragende spiller etter at Tigers slo Clark og Iowa, 102-85, for å vinne det nasjonale mesterskapet.
Hawkeyes slo Tigers i Elite Eight i årets March Madness-turnering, men tapte mot South Carolina Gamecocks i tittelkampen.
I forrige uke møtte WNBA-kommissær Cathy Engelbert tilbakeslag fra spillere etter at hun omgikk et spørsmål om hvordan hun håndterer den «mørkere» siden av sosiale medier og dens innvirkning på ligaens spillere, spesielt når det kommer til Clark og Reeses fanbaser.
I stedet, under en nylig opptreden på CNBCs «Power Lunch», fokuserte Engelbert på fordelene med Clark-Reese-rivalisering, som hun sammenlignet med NBA-legendene Magic Johnson og Larry Bird, hvis spilledager fant sted før sosiale medier fantes.
