Maman, en forretningsmann med tilknytning til Tyrkia, ble angivelig smuglet inn i Iran bak på en lastebil i april etter å ha avtalt å møte en velstående forretningsmann som bor der i forretningsøyemed, sa etterretningstjenestemenn.
«Den israelske statsborgeren kom inn i Iran … smuglet gjennom grensen gjemt inne i en lastebilkabin,» heter det i Shin Bet-uttalelsen.
«Han møtte flere iranske etterretningsagenter og ble bedt av dem om å utføre aktiviteter for Iran på israelsk jord, inkludert å fremme attentatangrep.»
Iranerne foreslo at han skulle utføre oppgaver for Iran, inkludert å overføre penger eller en pistol, fotografere overfylte steder eller true andre israelske sivile som opererte på vegne av Iran som ikke utførte de forespurte oppdragene, sa etterretningstjenestemenn.
Maman dro angivelig tilbake til Israel, men returnerte til Iran for andre gang – også smuglet inn i en lastebil – forrige måned.
På det andre besøket ba iranske tjenestemenn ham om å gjennomføre attentatplanene, ifølge israelske myndigheter.
Forsvarsminister Yoav Gallant og Ronen Bar, sjefen for Shin Bets innenlandske etterretningsbyrå, ble angivelig også diskutert som mål.
Maman skal ha krevd en forskuddsbetaling på 1 million dollar før han utførte komplottet, sa sikkerhetstjenestemenn.
Iranske tjenestemenn avviste imidlertid forespørselen hans og sa at de ville holde kontakten og betalte ham 5500 dollar for å bli med på møtene.
Mamans advokat, Eyal Besserglick, beskrev klientens involvering i det påståtte komplottet som en «vurderingsfeil» og sa at han nå samarbeider med Israels etterretningsbyråer.
«Det kan allerede sies at dette er en person som i stor grad har hjulpet sikkerhetstjenestene til staten Israel, hvis barn tjener i sikkerhetsstyrkene,» sa Besserglick.
Israel har sagt at Iran planla de planlagte attentatene som hevn for drapet på Hamas-lederen Ismail Haniyeh, som ble drept i et luftangrep i Teheran i juli.
