WeightWatchers administrerende direktør Sima Sistani trakk seg brått fredag etter en to-års periode som inkluderte en kontroversiell omfavnelse av vekttapsmedisiner som Ozempic og Wegovy.
Sistani presset det 61 år gamle selskapet – kjent for personlige møter og porsjonskontroll – til å kjøpe en telehelseplattform som koblet pasienter med leger som kan foreskrive de populære fedmemedisinene.
Imidlertid har WeightWatchers’ aksjer vært i fritt fall, og stuper mer enn 90% i år.
Aksjen falt nesten 3 dollar fredag, og handlet under 1 dollar.
Før COVID-pandemien, og eksplosjonen i vekttapsmedisiner, nådde aksjen en topp på mer enn $44.
Tara Comonte, et styremedlem som tidligere fungerte som president i Shake Shack, har blitt valgt som midlertidig administrerende direktør mens selskapet vurderer en erstatter på heltid.
Tidligere talkshow-dronning og WeightWatchers styremedlem Oprah Winfrey kunngjorde tidligere i år at hun forlater selskapets styre etter at hun begynte å ta medisiner for vekttap.
Sistani, 61, forsøkte å utnytte mani rundt vekttapsmedisinene.
Under hennes ledelse kjøpte WeightWatchers Sequence, som siden har blitt omdøpt til WeightWatchers Clinic.
Telehelseklinikken tillot selskapet å begynne å dispensere GLP-1-medisiner i tillegg til den tradisjonelle menyen med adferdsendringsprogrammer.
Men konkurranse i telehelsesektoren – spesielt blant selskaper som tilbyr versjoner av GLP-1-medisinene – har hindret WeightWatchers.
I forrige måned kuttet selskapet sitt salgsmål for hele året og kunngjorde at det ville strømlinjeforme virksomheten sin i møte med et «raskt skiftende landskap».
Prognosekuttet sendte aksjekursen ytterligere ned.
Før han ble utnevnt til administrerende direktør i 2022, var Sistani medgründer og administrerende direktør for Houseparty, en videochat-app som tillot opptil 8 personer å bli med i en gruppesamtale til enhver tid.
