President Joe Biden godkjente søndag 567 millioner dollar i forsvarsstøtte til Taiwan, sa Det hvite hus, det siste grepet fra USA for å øke øyas militære i møte med økende spenninger med Kina.
USA er Taiwans viktigste internasjonale støttespiller og våpenleverandør selv i fravær av formelle diplomatiske bånd.
Kina har gjentatte ganger krevd Washington slutte å selge våpen til Taipei, som de hevder som sitt territorium.
I en uttalelse sa Det hvite hus at Biden hadde delegert utenriksministeren myndighet «til å styre uttaket på opptil 567 millioner dollar i forsvarsartikler og tjenester fra forsvarsdepartementet, og militær utdanning og trening, for å gi bistand til Taiwan. ”
Den ga ingen ytterligere detaljer.
I april signerte Biden et hardt tilkjempet lovforslag som gir milliarder av dollar i ny amerikansk bistand til Ukraina for krigen med Russland, så vel som for Israel og Taiwan.
Taipei har klaget over forsinkede amerikanske våpenleveranser, inkludert for oppgraderte F-14 jagerfly.
Kina, som ser på det demokratisk styrte Taiwan som sitt eget territorium, har økt militært og politisk press i løpet av de siste fem årene for å hevde sine påstander, noe Taipei sterkt avviser.
