Ina Gartens mor holdt ikke tilbake fra å dele sin skarpe mening.
Barefoot Contessa-stjernen, 76, var åpen om hvordan moren hennes, Florence, mente å gifte seg med sin nå 56-årige ektemann, Jeffrey, var en stor feil – år før paret kort skilte seg.
«Moren min gikk inn i rommet og sa: ‘Jeg synes dette er en forferdelig idé’,» husket Garten mens han var på «I dag» tirsdag.
Kokkens foreldre kjørte til Syracuse University for å se henne etter å ha antatt at Jeffreys telefonsamtale til dem gikk foran et frieri.
«Jeg tok meg bare sammen,» sa Garten til Hoda Kotb. Hun sa til moren sin for første gang i livet hennes: «Jeg bryr meg ikke om hva du tenker.»
Men faren hennes, Charles, hadde et annet syn på parets forening. Som Garten sa det, kalte faren hennes å gifte seg med Jeffrey, 77, «det smarteste du noen gang har gjort.»
Paret giftet seg før hun ble uteksaminert fra college da Jeffrey gikk inn i hæren.
«Han bare gledet meg totalt», sprutet kokebokforfatteren til Kotb. «Han fikk meg til å føle meg så smart og morsom og gjennomtenkt og fantastisk, og det var han også.»
Garten kalte yngre Jeffrey «noe fremtidsrettet» da han «alltid oppmuntret meg til å ha mitt eget liv,» og fortalte henne tidlig i forholdet deres at hun burde finne sine egne lidenskaper i livet.
«Hvis du ikke gjør det, vil du ikke være lykkelig,» husket hun at han fortalte henne. «Jeg ble bare lamslått fordi det aldri falt meg inn at jeg ville gjøre noe.»
Når duoen knyttet sammen i 1968, motsto Garten ideen om å få barn.
Hun tenkte: «Jeg tenkte: ‘Hvorfor skulle jeg ønske å gjenskape det marerittet jeg nettopp kom fra?»
«Jeg kan ikke engang forestille meg,» fortalte hun om å bringe barn til verden. «Jeg vet bare ikke om jeg ville vært en god forelder, og jeg elsker livet mitt slik det er nå, og jeg kunne umulig ha hatt det hvis jeg hadde barn.»
Garten tenkte at hun og Jeffrey hadde et tradisjonelt ekteskap i starten.
«Han var alltid mannen,» forklarte Food Network-stjernen, «og jeg var alltid kona.»
Over tid innså Garten at hun trengte et likeverdig partnerskap.
De to skilte seg kort, og Garten fortalte People forrige måned før utgivelsen av memoarene hennes «Be Ready When the Luck Happens», «det var visse roller vi spilte, og jeg syntes de var veldig irriterende. Jeg følte at hvis jeg bare trykket på pauseknappen, ville jeg få oppmerksomheten hans.»
Hun bemerket at Jeffrey «forventet en kone som ville lage middag.»
«Det viser seg at jeg elsker å lage middag!» ertet hun til Kotb. «Jeg ville bare ikke at noen skulle det forvente meg for å lage middag.»
De to klarte det til slutt gjennom terapi og samtaler om fremtiden deres.
«Vi gjenintroduserte oss selv på et annet grunnlag,» erkjente Garten. «Og jeg husker at jeg tenkte med meg selv: ‘Herregud, jeg blir forelsket i noen som tilfeldigvis er mannen min.’ Det var en utrolig opplevelse.»
