Den kontroversielle Washington Post-teknologispaltist Taylor Lorenz forlot den venstreorienterte avisen tirsdag – uker etter at hun skapte oppstyr for å ha kalt president Biden en «krigsforbryter» på Instagram-kontoen sin.
Lorenz, som ikke hadde publisert noe for det Jeff Bezos-eide broadsarket siden 7. august, sa at hun dro for å lansere sitt eget nyhetsbrev på Substack-plattformen, ifølge The Hollywood Reporter.
Nyhetsbrevet hennes, med tittelen «User Magazine», vil «dekke teknologi fra brukersiden,» sa hun til utsalgsstedet.
«Det handler om hvem som har makt på internett og hvordan den makten blir brukt,» sa hun.
Lorenz – som har vært i sentrum av kontroversen i løpet av en tumultarisk karriere som inkluderte stints hos The New York Times og The Daily Beast – sa at hun «bare ønsket å komme seg ut av eldre medier».
«Jeg føler at det bare er veldig, veldig vanskelig å gjøre den typen rapportering som jeg ønsker å gjøre på internett innenfor slike eldre institusjoner som en primær jobb,» sa hun til THR.
Washington Post sa at det hadde startet en etterforskning av Lorenz etter at New York Post-reporter Jon Levine publiserte på sin X-konto et øyenbrynshevende Instagram-bilde som hun lastet opp mens hun deltok på et arrangement i Det hvite hus med Biden.
Lorenz tok selfie-bildet med Biden i bakgrunnen og bildeteksten «Krigsforbryter» skrevet under bildet hans.
Hun delte bildet med en utvalgt vennekrets på Instagram, hvor hun har totalt 143.000 følgere.
Lorenz hevdet at bildet, som ikke var ment for offentlig forbruk, ble digitalt endret, og skrev: «Dere vil falle for enhver dum redigering noen gjør.»
Hun fortalte redaktørene sine i The Washington Post at bildet var en forfalskning.
Men National Public Radio bekreftet ektheten til bildet, og bekreftet Levines X-innlegg.
Hun tok ned innlegget en time etter at det ble sirkulert til vennene hennes på Instagram.
Washington Post avslørte ikke resultatet av etterforskningen.
Tirsdag sa en talsperson: «Vi er takknemlige for arbeidet Taylor har produsert i The Washington Post. Hun har sagt opp for å satse på en karriere innen uavhengig journalistikk, og vi ønsker henne det beste.
Lorenz, som ble med i avisen i 2022, sa at hun ser frem til å ha et «virkelig interaktivt forhold til publikummet mitt.»
«Jeg liker å være veldig vokal på nettet, så klart. Og jeg tror bare at alt dette er veldig vanskelig å gjøre i rollene som er tilgjengelige ved disse eldre institusjonene, sa hun.
Lorenz, sa at «legacy institusjoner … virkelig slet med å dekke internett på noen meningsfull måte.»
«Jeg skriver om oppmerksomhetsøkonomien, og jeg skriver om innholdsskaperindustrien, og jeg vil bare ha fullstendig autonomi til å skrive og gjøre og si hva jeg vil, og engasjere meg litt mer direkte med leserne mine, med publikum, når det kommer til jobben min, sa hun.
I 2022 ble Lorenz mye kritisert for å avsløre identiteten til den sosiale mediepersonen «Libs of TikTok».
Uker tidligere dukket Lorenz opp på MSNBC og brøt sammen i tårer mens hun husket hvordan hun møtte «trakassering» fra kritikere på nettet.
Under sin periode som teknologireporter for Times ble hun saksøkt av en forretningskvinne som hevdet at hun ble ærekrenket av en påstand om at hun lekket nakenbilder av en av kundene hennes.
Lorenz ble også kritisert for å ha anklaget teknologimogulen Marc Andreessen for å bruke et nedsettende uttrykk under en privat samtale på Clubhouse-appen. Anklagen viste seg å være falsk.
