En 22 år gammel israelsk kommandosoldat er drept i kampen mot Hizbollah-terrorister i Libanon, opplyser israelsk militær onsdag.
Kaptein Eitan Itzhak Oster, fra Israels elite Egoz Commando Unit, døde i kamp i en ikke avslørt landsby i Sør-Libanon, rapporterte Times of Israel.
Hans død markerer det første offisielle dødsfallet blant israelske tropper siden den jødiske staten startet sin bakkeinvasjon denne uken.
The Times of London rapporterte at et ubekreftet antall israelske tropper ble drept onsdag etter å ha blitt overfalt nær Hizbollah-tunneler nær den sørlibanesiske landsbyen Odaisseh.
Det var ikke klart om Oster var blant de omkomne.
Militæret ga ingen andre detaljer om hans død.
En overlevende fra bakholdet fortalte uttaket at alle i enheten hans hadde blitt skadet i angrepet – men de hadde klart å trekke seg tilbake.
Utviklingen kom bare timer etter at Hizbollah sa at deres krigere kjempet mot israelske styrker i grensebyen Maroun el-Ras – som markerte de første bakkesammenstøtene siden Israel begynte å presse inn i sin nordlige nabo for å hamre den Iran-støttede terrorgruppen.
Gruppen sa at den også hadde skutt raketter mot militærposter inne i Israel.
Gruppens mediesjef Mohammad Afif sa at disse kampene bare var «første runde» og at gruppen hadde nok jagerfly, våpen og ammunisjon til å presse Israel tilbake.
Det israelske militæret bekreftet at det styrket sin tilstedeværelse ved å kalle opp vanlige infanteri- og panserenheter for å bli med i sine bakkeoperasjoner i Libanon – en dag etter at Iran angrep Israel med en sperring av ballistiske missiler.
