Yankees’ siste 10 turer til ettersesongen endte ikke ved Canyon of Heroes.
Så Brian Cashman vet så altfor godt at uansett hvor bra han føler om klubben sin på vei inn i oktober – eller hvordan deres potensielle vei til World Series kan se ut – så skal det bare noen få dårlige kamper til før alt dette raser sammen.
Men Yankees vil prøve igjen fra og med lørdag mot Royals i ALDS, i forsøk på å fange franchisens unnvikende 28. mesterskap.
«Jeg tror vi har et godt skudd, men vi har bare et godt skudd hvis vi spiller vår beste baseball,» sa Cashman torsdag på en Zoom-samtale. «Jeg vet at vi har evnene, men samtidig vil jeg advare om at vi hadde evnene mange ganger før. Du må matche disse evnene med godt forsvar, flott baseløp, enorme offensive slag mot ekstremt tøffe pitching og åpenbart det viktigste aspektet er pitching etter beste evner.
«Jeg tror vi har brikkene som er her, vi har viljen til å få det til. Nå må vi bare møte en motstander som er veldig verdig. De har fortjent sin rett til å være her, og de er et farlig lag som vi nylig så da vi møtte dem for ikke så lenge siden.»
Cashman snakket en dag etter at Yankees’ årlige sluttspill-nemesis (Astros) og deres nylige divisjons-nemesis (Orioles) begge ble eliminert fra sluttspillet.
Plutselig er det bare Yankees og tre AL Central-lag – en divisjon Yankees har gjort til en vane med å tygge opp og spytte ut de siste oktober – som står igjen på AL-siden av braketten.
Men de kongelige har den typen startpitching – ledet av Seth Lugo (den sannsynlige Game 3-starteren) og venstresiden Cole Ragans (Game 2-starteren), som begge vil motta AL Cy Young-stemmer, med veteranen Michael Wacha som går i Game 1 – som kan holde lagene oppe om natten.
Og gitt at det for det meste har vært forbrytelsene som har blitt kaldt som har vært deres fall i de siste postseason-løpene, truer historien med å gjenta seg.
Så igjen, Yankees har aldri hatt Aaron Judge og Juan Soto i samme lagoppstilling for et sluttspill, selv om de sannsynligvis vil trenge støttebesetningen for å gå opp rundt dem også.
«Jeg tror guttene er klare,» sa manager Aaron Boone torsdag. «Jeg tror de er veldig fokuserte, jeg tror de er veldig sultne og vi er spente på å ta skuddet vårt.»
Yankees, som holdt simulerte kamper onsdag og torsdag på Stadium, med torsdager etterfulgt av en lagmiddag, gikk 5-2 mot Royals under den ordinære sesongen.
De tok tre av fire på Kauffman Stadium i juni før de vant to av tre i The Bronx den andre uken i september.
Royals’ sterke tre startere for ALDS, og en bullpen som har slått bedre nedover strekningen, truer med å spille spoiler i en serie med fem kamper.
De kom hit ved å holde Orioles til bare ett løp og 11 treff i en to-kamps sveip i wildcard-serien, med starter fra Ragans og Lugo.
Og lineupen deres fikk et løft tidligere denne uken da slugger Vinnie Pasquantino kom tilbake fra en brukket tommel for å gi stjerneshortstoppen Bobby Witt Jr. bedre beskyttelse bak seg.
«Jeg tror vi matcher godt mot noen, men jeg vet også at alle lag skremmer meg og er farlige,» sa Boone. «Det vi har sett fra dette Royals-teamet i hele år er at de er veldig godt avrundet, utmerket startende pitching. … Jeg synes de er et formidabelt lag, de er et skummelt lag. De kommer etter en stor serieseier mot en god motstander og vil trolig gå inn her med mye selvtillit.
«Når det er sagt, er vi spente på utfordringen med det. Gleder meg til å komme i gang lørdag kveld.»
Yankees brukte en del av sesongen på å spille som det beste laget i baseball, en del av det å spille som et av de dårligste lagene i baseball, og en del av det et sted midt i mellom.
Men de har ikke råd til den slags kalde svinger med så mye på lur fra lørdag.
«Min største bekymring er at det er en sport at du har dine høyder, du har dine nedturer, du har dine gode spill, du har dine dårlige spill,» sa Cashman. «I oktober må du sørge for å eliminere feilene dine – eller begrense dem til det beste av dine evner. De som spiller nær sine evner mens de begrenser feil i serier har en sjanse til å gå videre. De som lager for mange blir sendt hjem.»
