Stjernen i Disneys live-action «Snøhvit»-reboot, Rachel Zegler, forsvarer seg mot tilbakeslag hun fikk etter å ha ropt ut den «rare» kjærlighetshistorien i den originale animasjonsfilmen for mange år siden.
I et nytt intervju med Variety anklaget Zegler kritikerne hennes for å ta kommentarene hennes «ut av kontekst» etter at intervjuopptak fra 2022 viste at hun hevdet den originale filmen som gammeldags i sin skildring av romantikk mellom Snøhvit og prinsen som reddet henne.
«Helt ærlig, det gjorde meg trist at det ble tatt på en slik måte, fordi jeg tror at kvinner kan gjøre alt. Men jeg tror også at de kan gjøre alt, sa hun til Hollywood-utsalget.
I 2022-klippet fra Disney D23 Expo det året kommenterte Zegler at filmatiseringen hennes av det klassiske eventyret var mer moderne.
«Jeg mener bare at det ikke lenger er 1937,» sa hun den gang, og la til, «Hun kommer ikke til å bli reddet av prinsen og hun kommer ikke til å drømme om ekte kjærlighet. Hun drømmer om å bli den lederen hun vet hun kan være og lederen som hennes avdøde far fortalte henne at hun kunne bli hvis hun var fryktløs, rettferdig, modig og sann.»
Andre steder kommenterte hun at noen deler av den originale filmen var «rare», og det sa at prinsen «bokstavelig talt forfølger» Snow White.
Fans av den originale Disney «Snøhvit» og andre kulturkommentatorer slengte Zeglers ønske om en versjon av den klassiske historien med moderne kjønnsnormer inn i den. Skuespillerinnen har siden blitt gjenstand for hån, og Disneys kommende film – ut i 2025 – har blitt avskrevet av mange filmfans på nettet.
I hennes nylige intervju forklarte Zegler at hun aldri hadde til hensikt at kommentarene hennes skulle være støtende, og uttalte at hun bare mente den klassiske Disney-karakteren har mål i tillegg til å bli forelsket i prinsen.
Hun sa: «Jeg ville aldri ønsket å sette noen inn og si: ‘Hvis du vil ha kjærlighet, kan du ikke jobbe.’ Eller ‘Hvis du vil jobbe, så kan du ikke ha familie.’ Det er ikke sant. Det har aldri vært sant. Det kan være veldig opprørende når ting blir tatt ut av kontekst eller vitser ikke lander.»
Skuespillerinnen benektet også påstandene om at Disney skulle oppdatere kjærlighetshistorien for moderne tid. «Kjærlighetshistorien er veldig integrert. Mange skrev at vi ikke gjorde det [that storyline] lenger — vi gjorde alltid det; det var bare ikke det vi snakket om den dagen.»
Mens hun fortsatte, foreslo Zegler at kommentarene hennes ble tatt ut av kontekst av folk som ønsker å rive ned kjente kvinner. Variety uttalte: «Zegler er ikke overrasket over det hun ser på som folks bevisste misforståelse av kommentarene hennes. Det er pari for kurset for en frittalende ung kvinne i offentligheten.»
Skuespillerinnen la til «Jeg har sett kvinner bli revet ned hele livet mitt, hele karrieren min. Vi ser det i valget som kommer. Vi kommer til å være vitne til det i lang tid, frykter jeg.
Noen ganger kan det føles som om vi skal tilbake; det føltes absolutt slik når det skjedde.»
I tillegg til «Snøhvit»-kontroversen, utløste Zegler også raseri for en anti-israelsk uttalelse hun delte til X i august.
Etter å ha takket fansen for å ha stilt inn den første traileren til «Snøhvit»-filmen på nettet, la hun til, «og husk alltid, gratis Palestina».
