Tidligere president Donald Trump er overbevist om at hans støttespillere i deler av landet som er herjet av orkanen Helene vil klare seg til urnene på valgdagen – «selv om de må krype».
«Republikanske områder ble veldig hardt rammet,» erkjente den tidligere presidenten i et intervju med Fox News-vert Laura Ingraham som ble sendt mandag.
«Mange mennesker er døde. De vet ikke engang hva det kommer til å bli når det gjelder antall … hundrevis mangler, la han til.
Til tross for ødeleggelsene, spesielt i svingstaten North Carolina, sa Trump til Ingraham at han ikke ser for seg et scenario der stormens virkninger hindrer støttespillerne hans fra å stemme.
«Jeg tror de kommer til å gå ut og stemme hvis de må krype til en stemmeboks,» sa den 45. presidenten. «Og det er det som skjer.»
Trump bemerket at hans svigerdatter, medformann for den republikanske nasjonalkomiteen Lara Trump, er en del av et team som sørger for at velgerne kommer til stemmeurnene på steder som ble hardt rammet av Helene, som kom i land 26. september som en mektig kategori 4. orkan.
«Lara jobber med det. Andre mennesker jobber med det, og vi prøver å gjøre det praktisk for dem – men de har nettopp mistet huset sitt,” sa han. «Vi prøver å gjøre det praktisk for dem å gå ut og stemme.»
Trump antydet da at Harris-Biden-administrasjonens svar på stormen faktisk kan hjelpe i sør.
«[W]e gjør det veldig bra på visse områder som vi ikke var forventet å gjøre – Virginia, vi gjør det bra. Vi har det bra over alt. Jeg tror vi kommer til å gjøre det bra i North Carolina, fordi responsen har vært så dårlig på orkanen – denne responsen har vært forferdelig,” argumenterte han.
President Biden hevder den føderale responsen på orkanen har vært «robust», men Trump sa at han ikke har vært vitne til det i sine flere besøk i Georgia og North Carolina.
«Han vet ikke hva robust er,» sa den tidligere presidenten om den 81 år gamle øverstkommanderende. «Han burde være der. Og [Vice President Kamala Harris] burde være der. Hun burde ikke være på pengeinnsamlinger.»
«Jeg ville ha et enormt team med mennesker her,» sa Trump om hvordan han ville ha håndtert ettervirkningene av stormen. «De har ingen folk her.»
«Jeg var i Nord-Carolina i går … de har ikke folket, og de klager på at det ikke er folk rundt som kan hjelpe,» hevdet han.
«Jeg var der hele dagen, og jeg så praktisk talt ingen andre enn de som ble hardt berørt,» la Trump til.
Trump leder Harris med mindre enn et prosentpoeng i North Carolina, og han er opp med 1,5 poeng i Georgia, ifølge det siste RealClearPolitics-gjennomsnittet av meningsmålinger.
