Er dette den mest ettertraktede kornmorderen?
En tidligere FDA-ansatt har avslørt det han hevder er den mest skadelige frokostblandingen på det amerikanske markedet.
Dr. Darin Detwiler, som tidligere har fungert som mattrygghetsekspert for byrået, fortalte Daily Mail at Kellogg’s Froot Loops er de verste av gjengen, og påpekte, eller gjennom, at regnbueringene er «tungt behandlet og inneholder høye nivåer» av tilsatt sukker, kunstige fargestoffer og konserveringsmidler, som er knyttet til helseproblemer.»
Gitt klesvasklisten over ingredienser som er dårlige for deg i frokostblandingen i pose, sier Detwiler at overflødig sukker er minst avskyelig.
En porsjon med én kopp Froot Loops inneholder 12,35 gram sukker, nesten halvparten av det anbefalte daglige inntaket for barn. Imidlertid, som Detwiler forklarer, er porsjonsstørrelsen urealistisk ettersom de fleste barn spiser mer enn den anbefalte enkeltkoppen.
Den knallrøde fargen som finnes i Froot Loops kommer med tillatelse fra Red 40, et kontroversielt tilsetningsstoff knyttet til en rekke helseproblemer.
En studie fra 2022 ga «alarmerende» resultater om effekten av Red 40 – noen ganger kalt Allura red – på menneskets fordøyelseskanal.
Forskere fra McMaster University i Ontario, Canada, hevdet at det syntetiske fargestoffet potensielt kan utløse irritabel tarm og Crohns sykdommer etter å ha observert biomarkørene for skade i tarmcellene til mus.
Den gode legens åpenbaring kommer da mer enn 1000 kornelskere og helseaktivister marsjerte mot Kelloggs hovedkvarter i Michigan på tirsdag, og krevde slutt på «skadelige tilsetningsstoffer» som injiseres i amerikanske partier av produkter som Froot Loops og Apple Jacks.
Over 400 000 signaturer ble levert til frokostmatgigantens kontorer i Battle Creek, og ba om å fjerne kunstige fargestoffer og konserveringsmidler som skyldtes helsedefekter og atferdsproblemer hos noen barn.
«Det er nå 2024, og Kellogg’s selger fortsatt flere frokostblandinger med kunstige farger og smaker i Amerika, som alle er rettet mot små barn,» heter det i oppropet. «Enda verre, Kellogg’s fortsetter å lansere NYE frokostblandinger for barn fylt med kunstige ingredienser, som Minecraft Frosted Flakes og Disneys Little Mermaid Cereal.»
Skuespillerinne Eva Mendes la stemmen sin til refrenget, og tok til Instagram for å dele: «Jeg vokste opp på frokostblanding. Jeg elsker det fortsatt, men jeg kommer ikke til å spise @kelloggsus lenger etter at jeg fant ut at så mange av ingrediensene de bruker her i USA er FORBUD i andre land. Hvorfor? Fordi de er skadelige for barn.»
I mars i år satte Kellogg-investor Jason Karp, grunnlegger og sjef for sunn matselskapet HumanCo, Kellogg på spreng, og hevdet at «i jakten på kortsiktig fortjeneste, fyller Kellogg sine mest allestedsnærværende kornprodukter i USA … med skadelig kunstig fargestoffer, som Red 40, Yellow 6 og Blue 1, samt konserveringsmidlet BHT.
Karp påsto at Kellogg’s er godt klar over farene ved disse tilsetningsstoffene. Han siterte forskning fra Center for Science in the Public Interest som knytter fargestoffene til organskader, kreft, atferdsproblemer og hyperaktivitet.
Kelloggs administrerende direktør Gary Pilnick skapte bølger i februar da han foreslo å spise frokostblandinger til middag var en løsning på skyhøye dagligvarekostnader.
Food and Drug Administration sier at fargetilsetningsstoffer er trygge for konsum når de brukes i henhold til forskriftene, og at det ikke er etablert noen årsakssammenheng mellom kjemikalier og atferdseffekter hos barn.
«Samlet av vitenskapelige bevis indikerer at de fleste barn ikke har noen negative effekter når de spiser mat som inneholder fargetilsetningsstoffer, men noen bevis tyder på at enkelte barn kan være følsomme for dem,» sier FDA.
I 2015 lovet Kellogg’s å fjerne kunstige farger og ingredienser fra produktene sine innen utgangen av 2018.
Red 40 og Yellow 5 – begge brukt til å lage Froot Loops i USA, men ikke i utlandet – er helt sperret i Storbritannia.
Japan forbyr også bruken av Red 40, og Canada forbyr bruken av BHT-konserveringsmidlet. Mens den amerikanske versjonen av Froot Loops er fylt med petroleumsbaserte matfargestoffer, inneholder frokostblandingens kanadiske motstykke mer naturlige fargestoffer, som konsentrert gulrot-, vannmelon- og blåbærjuice.
«Kvaliteten og sikkerheten til maten vår er vår høyeste prioritet. Produktene våre – og ingrediensene vi bruker til å lage dem – er i samsvar med alle gjeldende relevante lover og forskrifter, og vi er fortsatt forpliktet til å merke ingrediensene våre på en transparent måte slik at forbrukerne enkelt kan ta valg om maten de kjøper, skrev WK Kellogg Company i en e-post til Posten.
«I dag inneholder mer enn 85 prosent av kornsalget vårt ingen farger fra kunstige kilder. Faktisk innoverer vi kontinuerlig nye frokostblandinger som ikke inneholder farger fra kunstige kilder på tvers av våre største merker, og tilbyr et bredt utvalg av nærende matvarer til forbrukerne våre, fortsatte Kellogg. «Denne tilnærmingen er i samsvar med vår forpliktelse til å møte utviklende forbrukerpreferanser.»
Det ser ut til at disse preferansene beveger seg mot rene ingredienser.
Tidligere i år signerte Californias guvernør Gavin Newsom California School Food Safety Act i lov, en første i sitt slag delstat som forbød seks fargestoffer funnet i måltider, drikke og snacks servert i skolens kafeteriaer.
