Dodgers-legenden og seks ganger All-Star Fernando Valenzuela døde tirsdag kveld, kunngjorde Major League Baseball.
Han var 63.
Ingen dødsårsak ble oppgitt.
«Fernando Valenzuela var en av de mest slagkraftige spillerne i sin generasjon,» sa MLB-kommissær Rob Manfred i en uttalelse tirsdag kveld. «Med sin særegne pitching-stil skapte Dodgers-venstrehenderens rookie-sesong så mye spenning i USA og hjemlandet Mexico at det ofte ble referert til som «Fernandomania». Sesongen hans i 1981 rangerer blant de mest dekorerte pitching-årene gjennom tidene, da Fernando var National League Rookie of the Year, vinneren av NL Cy Young Award, en Silver Slugger og en World Series-mester.
Etter å ha startet sin profesjonelle karriere i Mexico, signerte Valenzuela med Dodgers i 1979 og debuterte i MLB i 1980, 19 år gammel.
«Han er en av de mest innflytelsesrike Dodgers noensinne og hører hjemme på Mount Rushmore av franchisehelter,» sa Stan Kasten, teampresident og CEO, i en uttalelse. «Han galvaniserte fanskaren med Fernandomania-sesongen i 1981 og har holdt seg nært hjertene våre siden den gang, ikke bare som spiller, men også som kringkaster. Han har forlatt oss alt for tidlig.»
Valenzuela brøt virkelig inn på scenen ett år senere, hvor han vant National League Cy Young, Rookie of the Year og laget sitt første All-Star-lag, og feide opp Los Angeles i «Fernandomania» takket være hans dominerende ting og hans uvanlige pitching-stil hvor han så mot himmelen midt under oppviklingen.
«63 er alt for ungt… En del av barndommen min er borte,» skrev skuespilleren og «Access Hollywood»-medverten Mario Lopez på X. «Å vokse opp som en meksikansk gutt er en av hovedgrunnene til at jeg er Dodgers-fan på grunn av Fernando. … Ikke bare en stor spiller, men en stor mann for samfunnet. For en legende.»
I den 1981-sesongen – som han også hevdet en Silver Slugger – hjalp han Dodgers med å beseire Yankees i World Series.
Valenzuela fikk kallenavnet «El Toro» av fansen, og hadde en uortodoks og minneverdig pitching-bevegelse som inkluderte å se mot himmelen på toppen av hver avvikling.
Repertoaret hans inkluderte en skrueball – noe som gjorde ham til en av få pitcher i sin tid som kastet den banen regelmessig.
Det ble lært ham av lagkamerat Bobby Castillo etter at Dodgers følte at Valenzuela, som ikke var kjent som en hardkaster, trengte en ny bane.
Valenzuela gikk 3-1 i løpet av ettersesongen, og gikk distansen i en seier på ni omganger i Game 3 av World Series.
Han spilte 17 år – 11 med Dodgers – i de store ligaene, og vant 173 kamper og slo ut 2074 med en ERA på 3,54.
Southpaw ledet NL i komplette kamper tre ganger i løpet av karrieren, inkludert de 20 han kastet i 1986, som var toppsummen i majors.
I løpet av de siste 22 årene var han en spanskspråklig kringkaster for Dodgers, selv om han forlot jobben i september og ble innlagt på sykehus tidligere i oktober, rapporterte Associated Press.
