En komité i hus avslørte fredag at Pentagon, andre amerikanske byråer og EU – i tillegg til utenriksdepartementet – har finansiert et for-profit «faktasjekking»-firma som svartelistet The Post.
Leder for House Oversight Committee James Comer (R-Ky.) skrev et brev til firmaet NewsGuard, og krevde flere detaljer om det offentlig-private samarbeidet som førte til at utenriksdepartementet i fjor ble saksøkt av konservative utsalgssteder som ble stemplet som mer «risikofylt» enn sine liberale kolleger.
NewsGuard har orientert komiteens ansatte om kontrakter de hadde med forsvarsdepartementet i 2021, inkludert Cyber National Mission Force innen US Cyber Command; utenriksdepartementet og dets Global Engagement Center; og EUs felles forskningssenter.
«Komiteen skriver i dag for å søke ytterligere dokumenter og kommunikasjon fra NewsGuard relatert til alle tidligere og nåværende kontrakter med eller bevilgninger administrert av føderale myndigheter eller andre statlige enheter, inkludert utenlandske myndigheter,» informerte Comer NewsGuard-sjefene Steven Brill og Gordon Crovitz.
«Beskyttelsen av første endringsrettigheter til amerikanske borgere er overordnet, og forsøk fra statlige aktører på å krenke disse rettighetene er farlig og misforstått,» advarte styrelederen.
Tilsynspanelet i juni åpnet sin undersøkelse av NewsGuards tilsynelatende deltakelse i en statlig finansiert «sensurkampanje» for angivelig å diskreditere og til og med demonetisere nyhetskanaler ved å dele vurderingene av deres pålitelighet med annonsører.
Comer uttrykte også bekymring for NewsGuard-ansatte som deler innlegg på sosiale medier som viser venstreorientert partiskhet, i strid med selskapets retningslinjer, og firmaet som struper misfornøyde utsalgssteders «feilinformasjon» – som i minst ett tilfelle inkluderte en publisert akademisk studie om svikt i nedstengninger under COVID-19-pandemien.
«Disse omfattende forbindelsene med forskjellige offentlige etater finner sted ettersom regjeringen raskt utvider seg til sensursfæren,» skrev styrelederen. «For eksempel avslørte ett søk av offentlige tilskudd og kontrakter fra 2016 til 2023 at det var 538 separate tilskudd og 36 forskjellige offentlige kontrakter spesifikt for å adressere «feilinformasjon» og «desinformasjon.»
De høyreorienterte nettstedene Daily Wire og Federalist sendte inn en sivil klage mot utenriksdepartementet i desember 2023 for angivelig å ha brukt skattebetalers dollar til å finansiere firmaer som NewsGuard og Global Disinformation Index (GDI), som smurte utsalgsstedene som «leverandører av» desinformasjon.'»
Begge firmaene har relasjoner til sosiale medieplattformer som Facebook, YouTube og TikTok, så vel som annonsører som Dell Technologies, ExxonMobil og Nike, noe som skaper bekymring for hvordan deres «desinformasjon»-vurderinger vil påvirke virksomheten.
I 2022 distribuerte GDI en «Desinformation Risk Assessment» som rangerte de «risikofylte» nettstedene for faktanyheter som Federalist, Daily Wire, Newsmax, American Conservative, Reason Magazine og New York Post, blant andre.
New York Times og Washington Post ble rangert som blant de «minst risikable».
I en uttalelse fredag sa Crovitz: «Da Trump-administrasjonen først ba oss om våre data og innsikt om desinformasjonskampanjer fra fiendtlige utenlandske regjeringer i 2020, inngikk vi kontrakt med dem på betingelse av at slikt arbeid er strengt begrenset til desinformasjon fra fiendtlige regjeringer. ikke amerikanske utgivere. Vi er stolte over at NewsGuards data og analyse har bidratt til å forsvare vestlige demokratier mot russisk, kinesisk og iransk desinformasjon. NewsGuard ble opprettet som et gjennomsiktig alternativ til sensur av myndigheter eller store teknologiselskaper, og vi sensurerer ikke noe innhold.»
Valgene i 2020 og 2024 har brakt såkalt «anti-misinformasjon» og «anti-desinformasjon»-innsats i forgrunnen – med The Posts bombe-scoop på Hunter Bidens bærbare datamaskin som falskt ble merket som en russisk fabrik av daværende kandidat Joe Biden.
Noen demokrater har siden antydet at den eneste måten å beseire tilbakeslaget til deres politikk er ved å knuse det første endringsforslaget.
President Bidens eks-klimautsending John Kerry kalte til og med den konstitusjonelle friheten «en stor blokkering» for å hindre folk i å tro på «feil» ting.
«Du vet, det er mye diskusjon nå om hvordan du begrenser disse enhetene for å garantere at du kommer til å ha litt ansvarlighet for fakta,» sa Kerry til et publikum på World Economic Forum i Davos, Sveits.
«Men se, hvis folk bare går til én kilde, og kilden de går til er syk, og du vet, har en agenda, og de legger ut desinformasjon, står vårt første tillegg som en viktig blokkering for å kunne bare, du vet, slå det ut av eksistens,» sa han.
Visepresident Kamala Harris’ kandidat, Tim Walz, bagatelliserte også ytringsfriheten under en opptreden i 2022 på MSNBCs «The Reid Out».
– Jeg tror vi må presse tilbake på dette. Det er ingen garanti for ytringsfrihet på feilinformasjon eller hatefulle ytringer, og spesielt rundt demokratiet vårt,” uttalte Minnesota-guvernøren unøyaktig.
Comer har bedt om at NewsGuard skal levere alle opptegnelser over kontrakter, tilskudd eller annet arbeid med Pentagon, utenriksdepartementet og andre føderale byråer eller avdelinger innen 8. november.
