Ukrainas president Vladimir Zelensky advarte om at Russland kan være klar til å utplassere nordkoreanske tropper allerede søndag.
«I følge etterretning forventes de første nordkoreanske soldatene å bli utplassert av Russland for å bekjempe soner så tidlig som 27.–28. oktober,» skrev Zelensky på X fredag, og la til at troppenes bevegelse var en «klar eskalering av Russland. ”
Pentagon bekreftet først tilstedeværelsen av DPRK-militært personell i Russland tidligere denne uken.
I en pressebriefing torsdag sa nestleder Pentagon-pressesekretær Sabrina Singh at Moskvas beslutning om å trekke på Nord-Korea «virkelig fremhever Russlands desperasjon».
«Jeg tror det viser at Putin har mislyktes i sine strategiske mål på slagmarken.»
Antall nordkoreanske soldater i Russland er anslått til å være 3000, la Singh til, men Ukraina har advart om at antallet kan vokse til opptil 12.000.
«Nord-Koreas faktiske engasjement i kamp bør ikke møtes med likegyldighet,» skrev Zelensky i sitt innlegg.
«Verden kan tydelig se Russlands sanne intensjoner: å fortsette krigen. En prinsipiell og sterk respons fra globale ledere er avgjørende.»
Tidligere denne uken advarte nasjonal sikkerhetskommunikasjonsrådgiver John Kirby at hvis nordkoreanske tropper blir utplassert for å kjempe i Ukraina, vil de være «rettferdig spill».
«De er rettferdige mål. Og det ukrainske militæret vil forsvare seg mot nordkoreanske soldater på samme måte som de forsvarer seg mot russiske soldater.»
