Forskere sier at 1,2 millioner lungekreftdødsfall over hele verden kan forhindres over 70 år ved å forby salg av sigaretter og andre tobakksprodukter til personer født mellom 2006 og 2010.
«Lungekreft er en stor morder over hele verden, og svimlende to tredjedeler av dødsfallene er knyttet til en risikofaktor som kan forebygges – tobakksrøyking,» sa studieforfatter Julia Rey Brandariz ved Universitetet i Santiago de Compostela i Spania.
«Vår modellering fremhever hvor mye det er å vinne for regjeringer som vurderer implementeringen av ambisiøse planer for å skape en tobakksfri generasjon,» la Brandariz til. «Ikke bare kan dette redde et stort antall liv, det kan redusere belastningen på helsesystemene med å behandle og ta vare på mennesker med dårlig helse som følge av røyking.»
Brandariz sin første simuleringsstudie – publisert onsdag i The Lancet Public Health – antyder at å skape en minitobakksfri generasjon kan forhindre 40 % av lungekreftdødsfallene som forventes å oppstå i denne gruppen innen 2095.
Forskerne sier de valgte denne gruppen, hvis medlemmer for øyeblikket er 13 til 18 år gamle, fordi den lovlige alderen for å kjøpe tobakksvarer er 18 i de fleste landene som er inkludert i analysen.
Å forby tobakksalg til disse Gen Zers ville ha størst innvirkning på Europa, ifølge studien.
«Mens røykefrekvensen i høyinntektsland har falt de siste årene, er lungekreft fortsatt en ledende årsak til død og sykdom,» sa studieforfatter Isabelle Soerjomataram fra International Agency for Research on Cancer.
«I lav- og mellominntektsland, som har en raskt voksende befolkning av unge mennesker, kan virkningen av å forby tobakksalg bli enda større,» fortsatte Soerjomataram.
Men sykepleier Jennifer Stevens, direktør for Northwell Health Center for Tobacco Control, uttrykte tvil om at forslaget kunne bli realisert.
«Det er ingen tvil om at forebygging og eliminering av salg av tobakkssigaretter vil øke dødeligheten og redusere helsekostnader globalt,» sa Stevens, som ikke er involvert i den nye forskningen, til The Post. «Men i flere tiår har lovgivere forsøkt å gå opp mot tobakksselskaper med noen, men ikke full suksess.»
Stevens sa at fokus bør forbli på håndhevelse, videreføring og implementering av retningslinjer som forbyr røyking i offentlige områder, så vel som på utdanningsprogrammer, spesielt for yngre generasjoner, som understreker farene og langsiktige effekter av røyking.
Den nye forskningen følger med en egen studie publisert onsdag i The Lancet Public Health som indikerer at å redusere røykeprevalensen fra dagens nivå til 5 % rundt om i verden innen 2050 vil resultere i et ekstra år med forventet levealder for menn og 0,2 år for kvinner.
Det internasjonale teamet av forskere spår at den globale forventet levealder vil øke fra 73,6 år i 2022 til 78,3 år i 2050.
Det er anslått at etter aldersjustering vil 21 % av mennene og 4 % av kvinnene røyke i 2050, med betydelig variasjon etter region.
Studieforfatterne sier at hvis røyking hadde blitt fullstendig eliminert i fjor, kan forventet levealder øke med 1,5 år til for menn og 0,4 år for kvinner i 2050.
Røyking regnes som den ledende forebyggbare dødsårsaken i USA – det er ansvarlig for omtrent 1 av 5 dødsfall hvert år, ifølge American Cancer Society.
I tillegg til lungekreft øker røyking risikoen for hjertesykdom, hjerneslag, diabetes og kronisk obstruktiv lungesykdom.
Forskerne bemerket ulike begrensninger for de to modelleringsstudiene, inkludert å ikke ta hensyn til mulige helseeffekter av e-sigaretter og potensielle helseinnovasjoner, for eksempel bedre oppdagelse eller behandling av lungekreft.
