Da Anthony Duclair var en 15-åring i Pointe-Claire, Quebec, trodde han veien hans gikk gjennom college – og han hadde ingen bein om å fortelle interesserte lag i Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League akkurat det.
Patrick Roy, daværende trener og daglig leder for Quebec Remparts, var ikke så lett å blåse av.
«Pat bestemte seg fortsatt for å trekke meg,» sa Duclair mandag på Islanders veldedighetsgolfutflukt. «Det er tøft å si nei til Patrick Roy som en 15 år gammel gutt som prøver å komme seg til NHL.»
Duclair endte opp med å spille for Remparts.
Og tydeligvis var det like tøft for ham å si nei til Roy som en 29 år gammel NHL-veteran, ettersom Roy var med på å overbevise Duclair om å signere en fireårsavtale som gratis agent denne sommeren.
Duclair ankom Long Island for sin første treningsleir med laget for et par uker siden og har deltatt på veteranskøyter med laget siden den gang.
Når treningsleiren åpner på torsdag, sa Roy at planen er å la Duclair bli med Mathew Barzal og Bo Horvat på topplinjen – en slags gjenforening for Duclair og Horvat, som var romkamerater som 17-åringer for Team Canada på Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
«Jeg kjenner Bo veldig godt, bare krysset veier med ham da han var i Vancouver og spilte mot ham, åpenbart en solid 200 fots spiller,» sa Duclair. «En fyr du kan stole på i enhver situasjon. Bare en annen fyr jeg er veldig spent på å leke med og lære av.»
Når det gjelder Barzal?
«Superstjerne i denne ligaen. Har vært siden han kom inn, sa Duclair. «Bare åpenbart å spille mot ham, se hva han gjør, natt ut, natt ut, hvor mye lidenskap han har, bare konkurransenivået også. Mange av disse superstjernespillerne elsker virkelig å konkurrere, og han er en av de gutta.»
Å legge til en målgivende kantspiller til å spille sammen med stjerneparet var prioritet for Islanders i offseason.
Duclair, som har scoret 24 og 31 mål i sine to siste fullt friske sesonger og kommer med fart som kan holde tritt med Barzal, burde passe regningen.
Duclair har også spilt mot begge spesiallagene i karrieren, noe som gjør ham til et alternativ etter at straffesparket og kraftspillet begge slet for øyene forrige sesong.
«Selv bare å se ham de siste to ukene, kan han fly oppover isen,» sa Barzal. «Utenfor overgang og raske pauser, definitivt med den hastigheten kan vi være farlige. Jeg er spent på å se hvor det går. … Alle som får leke med ham vil være heldige.»
