På tirsdag vil tre asteroider på størrelse med «fly» skytes av planeten, ifølge NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Den første er en 84-fots en som vil være 1.130.000 miles unna, etterfulgt av en 110-fots romstein i en avstand på 2.130.000 miles, og deretter en 140-fots asteroide på 2.440.000 miles.
Og det er ikke alt: På lørdag vil en asteroide i «bygningsstørrelse» på 600 fot sveve forbi på 3 470 000 miles unna.
Imidlertid ruller disse aktuelle hendelsene bare ut den røde løperen for et prosjektil som har svettet i romadministrasjonen en stund.
En annen asteroide kan en dag påvirke Jorden når den flyr «ubehagelig» tett forbi i 2029 – nær nok til at folk kan se den med egne øyne og uten teleskoputstyr.
Asteroide 99942, bedre kjent som den oppdagede Apophis i 2004, ble oppkalt etter en gammel egyptisk mytologisk «demonslang som personifiserte ondskap og kaos.»
NASA beskrev denne 1100 fot over romdjevelen som et «nær-jordobjekt» – en som samlet «beryktethet … da astronomer spådde at det ville komme ubehagelig nær i 2029.»
Nyere analyse utelukker bestemt en kollisjonsbane, men den vil fortsatt skumme innenfor 20 000 miles fra jordens overflate om fem år.
Denne avstanden er nærmere enn satellitter i bane, ifølge NASA, som bemerket at det er for tidlig å si om asteroiden ville treffe jorden på en returreise over et århundre fra nå.
«Hvis det skulle møte et befolket område, kan det ta ut en by på størrelse med New York,» fortalte NASA-lederforsker Daniella DellaGiustina, som jobber med et oppdrag for å kartlegge Apophis, til The Washington Post.
Når det gjelder den nære og trygge fremtiden, bør skygazere markere 13. april 2029 som sin sjanse til å se Apophis.
De på den østlige halvkule – det meste av Europa og Afrika pluss hele Asia og Australia – vil se asteroiden rett over hodet uten behov for optisk utstyr. Washington Post bemerket også at Apophis synlighet vil være i en skala som er ti ganger så stor som månen.
«Det er også en enestående mulighet for astronomer å få et nærbilde av en solsystemrelikvie som nå bare er en vitenskapelig kuriositet og ikke en umiddelbar fare for planeten vår,» bemerket NASA.
Apophis’ nære møte med jorden kan også indusere «asteroideskjelv» som et resultat av interaksjoner med planetens gravitasjonskraft.
Etter 2029 vil romfjellet passere igjen i 2036 og mye senere i 2068.
«En 2068-påvirkning er ikke lenger i mulighetens rike, og våre beregninger viser ingen påvirkningsrisiko i minst de neste 100 årene,» sa Davide Farnocchia fra NASAs Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.
Når det gjelder fremtiden utover det, forblir banen til Apophis – og dens potensiale til å slå inn i jorden – ukjent på den tiden.
